Greenwich Seven-Drawer Chest London

The Greenwich is the family chest: three small drawers across the top for the socks, the chargers and the jewellery, and four deep drawers below in two pairs for the jumpers and the bedding. The walnut top gives a painted chest a piece of timber to stand things on, and the black bars line up across the seven fronts.

It is shown twice, in a matt grey against a grey wall and in white against a green one, because the same chest suits both a dark room and a light one. The walnut top is the constant.

How it works: the seven drawers share one carcass with two dividers, so the top is supported at four points; the small drawers are 150mm deep and the large ones 250mm; all run on full-extension soft-close runners. The walnut top is a 25mm veneered board with a solid lipping, oiled rather than lacquered so it can be refinished.

Designed for a bedroom that is used

A chest with one size of drawer ends up with small things lost in large drawers. Splitting the top row into three shallow drawers keeps the daily things at hand height and separate, and leaves the deep drawers for what is folded. It is the chest most families choose for the main bedroom.

Designed for the room: the chest can be made narrower with two small drawers over three, the top can be oak or the same paint as the fronts, and the bars can be brass or nickel.

Built for everyday use: the lacquer wipes clean, the walnut top is oiled so a ring or a scratch can be sanded out, and the runners take 30kg per drawer.

The Greenwich is cut, built and sprayed in our HA9 Wembley factory, the walnut top lipped and oiled in the workshop, and the drawers fitted before delivery.
