HINGED OR SLIDING: THE 600MM TEST

There is one measurement that settles it. Stand at the wall where the wardrobe will go and measure to the nearest obstacle — the bed, a radiator, the bedroom door. If that distance is 600mm or more, hinged doors will give you better access and far more design choice. If it is less, choose sliding.

WHAT IS INCLUDED AS STANDARD

Specification included on every Metro Hinged Wardrobe

Blum soft-close hinges, rated to the weight of your door — three per door up to 2,000mm, four above that. Blum soft-close drawer runners. 18mm moisture-resistant carcass throughout, cut on a Felder beam saw and CNC machining centre. Adjustable shelving in 16mm increments. Hanging rails repositionable. Removal and disposal of your old wardrobes. A 10-year Metro guarantee on manufacture and installation, with the Blum mechanisms carrying their own separate manufacturer warranty on top.

None of the above is an upgrade. Where a door carries mirror, we specify heavier-duty hinges to suit the added weight, and that is included too.

COST

What a Hinged Door Wardrobe Costs

Hinged door wardrobes are priced individually, with most London commissions falling in the low to mid four figures. A compact two-door run sits at the lower end, classic shaker and painted finishes in the middle, and statement doors with arched panels, brushed gold inlay or rattan inserts at the upper end. Room width, door style and internal fittings are what move the figure.

The design visit is where that figure becomes real. Your designer measures the room properly, works around skirting, coving, radiators and anything out of square, and talks through doors and interiors before anything is priced. You leave with an itemised quotation fixed in writing and a clear fitting date.

Incredible piece of work in terms of design, quality build and installation. This is my second wardrobe from Metro, eventhough you feel it bit expensive but every penny worth it. Highly recommend.

Great service, quick, reliable, and beautiful finish! Would highly recommend metro for all your joinery needs.

I was very pleased with my wardrobe fitted by Metro. By having a custom design I could have exactly the spacing and layout I wanted. They came out to me so we could match the colour to my existing inbuilt wardrobe. Any changes I wanted in the design Mike was quick to do and send me updated previews. It also came in considerably cheaper than a well known wardrobes brand. A couple of snagging issues as you'd expect, and other than some mild chasing I had to do they put it right and all was good. I'd happily recommend them.

What are hinged wardrobes?

Hinged wardrobes are fitted wardrobes with doors that swing outward on hinges, giving you a full, unobstructed view of the entire interior at once. They are the most versatile wardrobe type, work in rooms of any size that have clearance in front, and accept the widest range of door styles — including shaker, panelled, handleless and mirrored designs that are not possible on a sliding track.

Hinged or sliding wardrobes — which is better?

Hinged wardrobes are better when you have floor space, because they open completely and let you see everything at once. Sliding wardrobes are better in tight rooms, because the doors need no clearance in front. The practical test: measure from the wardrobe wall to the nearest obstacle. Under 600mm, choose sliding. Over 600mm, hinged will give you better access and more design choice.

How much clearance do hinged wardrobe doors need?

A standard hinged wardrobe door needs approximately 600mm of clear floor space in front to open fully, though narrower doors on a wide run need proportionally less. If your bed, radiator or bedroom door sits closer than that, we can specify narrower door widths across the same wardrobe opening, or recommend a sliding system instead. Your designer measures this during the home visit.

How much do hinged wardrobes cost?

Every Metro hinged wardrobe is priced individually, so the figure depends on your room width, the door style you choose and the interior specification. Most projects fall in the low to mid four figures, with a compact two-door run at the lower end, classic shaker and painted finishes in the middle, and statement doors with arched panels, gold inlay or rattan inserts at the upper end.

What door styles are available for hinged wardrobes?

We offer 15 door styles across three collections. Classic covers shaker, heritage and raised-moulding doors suited to Victorian and period homes. Contemporary covers flat slab, micro-groove and handleless J-pull designs. Statement covers arched doors, brushed gold inlay borders, curved panels and rattan or glass inserts. All 15 are available in 100+ painted finishes, and your designer brings full-size samples to your home.

Can I have mirrored hinged wardrobe doors?

Yes. Mirrored hinged doors are available in full-length and partial configurations, and can be mixed with painted doors across the same run — a common layout is mirror on the centre doors with painted panels either side. Mirror adds weight, so we specify heavier-duty hinges accordingly. This is included in the design, not charged as an upgrade.

Do hinged wardrobe doors sag or drop over time?

Well-made hinged doors should not sag, and the cause when they do is almost always undersized hinges or a carcass that has moved. We use Blum soft-close hinges rated for the door weight and specify three or four hinges per door depending on height, with an 18mm moisture-resistant carcass that stays square. Blum hinges are adjustable in three planes, so alignment can be corrected in seconds if a door ever needs it.

Can hinged wardrobes be built over a bed or around a doorway?

Yes. Over-bed wardrobes with a bridging unit above the headboard and full-height towers either side are one of our most requested layouts in London bedrooms, and the same principle works around doorways, windows and radiators. The bridging section typically provides shelved storage for bedding. Door heights above a bed are specified so they clear the mattress when open.

How long does a hinged wardrobe take to make and fit?

Around 21 days from the day you approve your design to the day it is installed, covering manufacture at our Wembley workshop and scheduling your fitting date. Installation itself takes one to two days for most hinged wardrobes.

What hinges do you use, and are hinged wardrobes guaranteed?

We fit Blum soft-close hinges as standard on every hinged wardrobe, along with Blum soft-close drawer runners — included rather than offered as an upgrade. The wardrobe carries a Metro 10-year guarantee covering manufacturing and installation, and the Blum hinge mechanisms carry their own separate manufacturer warranty on top. Because we manufacture and fit in-house, there's a single point of contact for any aftercare.
