Bespoke over the bed wardrobes, made to measure for bedrooms across London. Over-bed wardrobes wrap storage around and above the bed: full-height towers either side, bridging cabinets over the headboard and a bedside built into the run, so one wall does the work of three. Each unit is made to measure in London and fixed to the wall structure by our own team.

Bamburgh over-bed wardrobe: cashmere grey towers, five bridging cabinets and a lit slatted panel behind the bed
The wall behind the bed, used properly

The bed wall is the biggest wall in the room.

Most bedrooms leave it empty.

A bed takes the middle of its wall and leaves the two ends and everything above head height unused. A freestanding wardrobe then goes on another wall, a chest on a third, and the room is furniture at every edge. An over-bed wardrobe puts all of it on the one wall the bed already occupies: a tower at each end of the bed, cabinets bridging the gap above the headboard, and the bedside built into the base of each tower.

The bridge is the part people ask about. Ours is fixed back to the wall structure and lands on the two towers, so the weight is carried down the run and not by the wall alone. The cabinets above the bed are shallower than the towers, which keeps them clear of your head when you sit up, and the space behind the headboard becomes a lit recess, a slatted panel or an oak-lined alcove rather than a gap.

The four parts

Four decisions that make an over-bed wardrobe work.

01

The bridge

The cabinets over the bed are the reason to do this, and the part that has to be built right. Ours are wall-fixed into the structure and sit on the two full-height towers, in solid 18mm construction, so the run carries itself. Their depth is set at the design visit to your bed and your height, so the doors open above you and never at you.

02

The towers

A full-height wardrobe at each end of the bed, on the wall the bed already uses. Hanging, shelving and drawers inside; slab or shaker doors outside, with mirror panels if the room needs the light. Where the wall is not symmetrical, the towers are not either. One can be wider, or one can give way to a sliding wardrobe alongside.

03

The bedside

The base of each tower becomes the bedside: a three-drawer chest built into the run, an open niche with a light and a drawer beneath, or a ledge along a slatted panel. Nothing freestanding, nothing to knock, and the lamp cable has somewhere to go.

04

The bedhead

The wall behind the headboard, framed by the towers and the bridge, is the detail that makes the run look designed rather than fitted. A lit recess, a slatted timber panel, an alcove lined in oak. It is also where the LED goes, on its own switch, for reading.

What's included as standard

Specified for the wall it hangs on.

01

Wall-fixed bridging

Every bridging cabinet is fixed back into the wall structure and lands on the towers at each end. Solid 18mm construction on the back, top and bottom, not a thin hardboard back. The wall is checked at the design visit before anything is drawn.

02

Made to measure, to the millimetre

The run is built to your wall width, your ceiling height and your bed, in our Wembley workshop. Under a sloping ceiling the towers and cabinets step down with the pitch. Around a window or a chimney breast, the run is planned to the room, not the other way round.

03

A bedside in the run

A three-drawer chest built into the tower, or a lit open niche over a drawer, on one side or both. Your bedside is part of the wardrobe, at the height you choose, with the lamp wired in.

04

Soft-close throughout

Concealed soft-close hinges on every door and soft-close runners on every drawer, including the ones above your head. Slim black bars, round knobs or handleless, chosen at the visit.

05

Lighting on its own switch

LED strip under the bridge, in the bedside niches or behind the headboard panel, in warm white, white or yellow. Dimmed for reading, separate from the room light.

06

10-year guarantee

Parts and labour on every cabinet, door, drawer and light fitting. Made and fitted by the same team, so if anything ever needs attention there is one call to make.

The over-bed commission

From wall check to installed handover.

An over-bed wardrobe is one run on one wall, so it is one of the quicker commissions: fitted within 21 days of your order being confirmed, and one to two days on site.

01
Home visit
Senior designer visits with the door and finish samples and a laser measure. The wall is checked, the bed measured, the ceiling height and any slope, window or chimney breast recorded. Two or three run options sketched on the day.
02
Design development
Drawings of the run: elevation of the bed wall with the towers, the bridge and the bedhead detail, and the inside of each tower planned around what you hang and fold. Fixed-price quotation.
03
Workshop manufacture
Cut, edged, painted and assembled in our Wembley workshop. Bridging cabinets built in solid 18mm construction; doors and drawer fronts finished and hardware fitted before delivery.
04
Installation
One to two days on site by our own fitters. Towers first, then the bridge fixed into the wall and onto the towers, then doors, lighting and the bedhead panel. Floors and door frames protected throughout.
05
Aftercare
Walk-through on the day, a check-in at 30 days, and a 10-year guarantee on every part. Your specification stays on file, so a matching piece can be added later in the same finish.

“We had 2 wardrobes and a dressing table fitted from Metro. The fitters were very friendly and professional. The fitting team was also knowledgeable and they finished everything sooner than expected. The dressing table was left off of the order, but has been ordered and fitted in few days. Really impressed with the turnaround time with Metro. All in all a great experience. Would highly recommend them.”

Over-Bed Wardrobes · FAQ

Questions clients ask at the first home visit.

A run of fitted storage built on the wall the bed stands against: a full-height wardrobe tower at each end of the bed, cabinets bridging the gap above the headboard, and usually a bedside chest or niche built into the base of each tower. The bed sits in the recess it creates. It is the way to get wardrobe, bedside and overhead storage onto one wall, which is why it suits London bedrooms where the other walls have a window, a door or a chimney breast.

We design, make and fit over the bed wardrobes across London, including Wembley, Harrow, North London and North West London. Book a free home design visit and we’ll measure the wall around your bed and send you a 3D design with a fixed quote.

Yes, when they are built and fixed as ours are. The bridging cabinets are fixed back into the wall structure and sit on the two towers, so their weight is carried down the run rather than hanging off the plaster. They are built in solid 18mm construction on the back, top and bottom. Your designer checks what the wall is made of at the home visit, and the fixings are chosen for it. The cabinets are also shallower than the towers, so you do not meet a door when you sit up in bed.

Metro over-bed wardrobes follow our twelve-level price guide: from £900 per metre at Level 3, so two towers with bridging cabinets across a three-metre wall from £2,700, including VAT, delivery and installation. Shaker doors (Level 6) are £1,860 per metre and hand-painted timber (Levels 11 and 12) £3,480 to £3,720 per metre. A run with a fitted desk and integrated bedsides on both sides is priced on the same basis. Priced after a home visit, once the wall and the bed have been measured.

Shallower than the towers. The towers are wardrobe depth so that hanging fits; the bridge above the bed is made to a depth set by your bed, your headboard and your height, so the doors open above you and the cabinets never feel close. The gap behind the headboard becomes the bedhead detail, a lit recess, a slatted panel or a lined alcove, rather than dead space.

No. The base of each tower becomes the bedside: a three-drawer chest built into the run, or an open niche with a light and a drawer beneath it, at whatever height suits the bed. The lamp is wired in and the cable disappears. Where the room is not symmetrical the bedside can be on one side only, with the other tower going to the floor.

Both. Under a slope the towers and the bridging cabinets step down with the pitch and the doors are cut to their own heights, as on the Osborne, where the run sits under a rooflight. Beside a window the run stops at the reveal and the bed goes under the window if that is where it works best, as on the Hever, where a mirrored sliding wardrobe takes the wall alongside. The run is planned to the room at the design visit.

Any, from a single to a super king. The run is the bed plus a tower at each end, so a double usually takes about 2.6m to 2.8m of wall and a super king about 3.1m to 3.4m. If the wall is shorter than that, the towers are made narrower or one side becomes a slimmer bedside unit; if it is longer, the extra becomes a wider tower or a sliding wardrobe alongside.

Yes. LED strip under the bridging cabinets for the bedside, in the open niches, or behind a slatted panel or recess at the bedhead, in warm white, white or yellow. It runs on its own switch or dimmer, separate from the room light, so one person can read while the other sleeps.

Slab or shaker doors in painted colours and woodgrains, from Premium White and Light Grey to Cashmere Grey and Fjord Green, with mirror panels in grey, bronze or silver where the room needs the light. Interiors come in Cotta Cremona Oak, our most chosen internal finish, or matched to the outside. Slim black bars, round knobs or handleless. Real samples are brought to your home so the colour is chosen in the room it will live in.

An over-bed wardrobe is one run on one wall, so it is among the quicker commissions: fitted within 21 days of your order being confirmed, with one to two days on site. Our own fitters protect the floors and door frames, fit the towers and the bridge, and finish with the doors, the lighting and the bedhead panel. You sleep in the room that night.
