Harewood Over-Bed Wardrobe London

The Harewood Over-Bed Wardrobe puts mirrors where a shaker wardrobe would normally have panels. The towers either side of the bed are shaker-framed doors with mirror in place of the centre panel, so the room gets the light and depth of a mirrored wardrobe without losing the frame that makes a shaker read as furniture. Above the bed, plain shaker bridging cabinets run across in the same light grey.

Between the towers the bed sits in an alcove lined in Cotta Cremona Oak, with a three-drawer chest built into the base of the left-hand tower at bedside height. Slim black bar handles throughout.

How it works: the two mirrored towers carry the bridging cabinets above, which are fixed to the wall and land on the towers at each end. The alcove behind the headboard is lined in oak on its back and sides, so the bed sits inside the wardrobe rather than against it, and the bedside chest is part of the tower carcass rather than a separate unit.

Doors are 18mm MFC shaker fronts on concealed soft-close hinges; the mirror panels are set into the door frames and can be specified in silver, grey or bronze.

A mirror inside a frame does something a full-mirror door cannot: it stops the reflection at the frame, so the run reads as four doors with mirrors in them rather than a wall of glass. In a bedroom that is usually the calmer result.

The mirrored towers take the everyday hanging and give you somewhere to dress in front of; the bridge takes the seasonal things; the alcove and chest take the bedside.

Making better use of the wall: the wall holds the wardrobes, the mirrors, the bedside storage and the headboard, and the room keeps its floor. The oak lining turns the gap between the towers from leftover wall into the warmest part of the room.

Built for everyday use: 18mm MFC throughout, with a solid 18mm back, top and bottom to every carcass. The mirror is bonded into the shaker frame, so a door is opened by its bar like any other and the mirror carries no load.

The finish shown is light grey shaker fronts with Cotta Cremona Oak inside and on the alcove; other door finishes, and plain panels in place of the mirrors, are available.

A mirrored shaker door is a shaker door with its centre cut out and a mirror set in from the back, and the cut has to be exact or the mirror rattles. The frames are routed on the CNC in our HA9 Wembley factory and the mirrors are cut to each opening, then bonded and backed before the door is hung.

The oak alcove lining is cut to the gap between the two towers from the survey, and the bedside chest is machined into the tower carcass with its runners fitted in the factory.

The wall, the bed and the ceiling are measured at your design visit, before anything is made.
