A bedside has one dimension to get right and most bought ones get it wrong: the height of its top against the mattress. Level with it or up to 50mm above, a glass and a phone are reached without looking; 100mm below, and everything is a stretch. Ours are drawn to your bed, and to the gap between the bed and the wardrobe door beside it.
The rest is about belonging. A bedside in the same paint, the same handle and the same frame as the wardrobes, sprayed in the same batch, makes the bed wall one piece of joinery. Freestanding on a plinth, floating on a concealed rail with the floor clear beneath, or built into the end of the wardrobe run: the same bedside, three ways.

The bedside, against the bed
The top of a bedside belongs level with the mattress top or up to 50mm above it, which on most beds is 550 to 650mm from the floor. A freestanding bedside stands on a plinth at that height; a floating one is hung on a concealed rail with its top at the same line and the floor clear beneath. A lamp on the top, or a wall light above it, lights the page at about a metre. Your designer measures the bed at the visit, and the bedside is made to it.

Six things a designer checks before a bedside is drawn.
Height from the mattress
The one dimension that matters. Measured from the mattress top at the design visit, not from a catalogue, so the top is where your hand expects it.
The gap beside the bed
A bedside is made to the space between the bed and the wardrobe door, so the door still opens and the bedside does not stand proud of the headboard.
The same batch as the wardrobes
Same paint mix, same handle, same frame, sprayed in the same run, so the bedside belongs to the wardrobes rather than sitting beside them.
A shallow drawer on top
The things reached for in the dark are small: glasses, a charger, a book. A 120mm top drawer keeps them separate from the deep drawer below.
Cables behind, not in front
A slot in the back panel takes the lamp lead and the charger, so the cable drops behind the bedside and the front stays clean.
Floating where the floor matters
On a concealed rail with the floor clear beneath, a bedside makes a small room read larger and is cleaned around with nothing to move.

Bedsides, in plan
A bed of 1.5 by 2.0 metres against the back wall, a bedside of 500 by 420mm either side, and a run of wardrobes on the left wall. What the plan protects is 650mm of floor between the wardrobes and the bedside, so a wardrobe door opens past it, and a bedside set 50mm off the headboard so the duvet has somewhere to go. In a narrower room the bedside on the wardrobe side is made narrower, or floats.

Questions clients ask about bedsides.
Level with the top of the mattress, or up to 50mm above it. On most beds that is 550 to 650mm from the floor. A bedside lower than the mattress makes a glass or a phone a stretch; one higher than 50mm above it becomes a shelf you reach up to. Ours are measured from your mattress at the design visit rather than sold at a standard height.
As wide as the gap allows and no wider: 450 to 600mm is usual. Against a wardrobe, leave 650mm from the wardrobe door to the bedside so the door opens; against a wall, 450mm. Where the room is tight, the bedside on the wardrobe side is made narrower than its pair, or floats so the floor stays clear.
Freestanding where you want drawers with depth and a lamp on top; floating where the floor matters, in a small room, with a lit headboard wall, or where cleaning under it is the point. A floating bedside hangs on a concealed steel rail rated for 40kg and takes one deep drawer; a pendant or a wall light replaces the lamp.
Yes, and that is the reason to have them made. Bedsides are sprayed in the same batch as the fitted wardrobes, with the same frame, handle and paint mix, so the bed wall reads as one commission. For wardrobes from another supplier we match the paint from a door sample and the handle from its make.
Yes. In a fitted bedroom the bedside is often the end of the wardrobe run, or part of an over-bed surround, drawn as one carcass with the wall of storage. It gives a flush line along the bed wall and a lit niche above the bedside with nothing freestanding.
Through a slot in the back panel of a freestanding bedside, so the lamp lead and the charger drop behind it. A floating bedside has a void behind it in which the wall light, the pendant and a charging socket are wired, so nothing shows.
Each. Most rooms take a pair and the pair is made together from the same sheets in one batch so the colour matches; a single bedside for a child's room or a guest bed is priced the same way. Prices on this page are the starting price for one.
Fitted within 21 days of your order being confirmed, and delivered with the wardrobes where they are ordered together. Freestanding bedsides are delivered assembled and levelled in place; floating ones are fixed to the wall on their rail, which takes about an hour a pair.
