Media walls and TV units

A fitted media wall is bespoke joinery built around a television so that the screen, speakers, consoles and cabling become part of the wall rather than furniture standing in front of it. It typically combines a recessed TV position, closed cabinets for equipment, open display shelving and integrated lighting — all built to your room's exact dimensions and finished to match your interior.

Media wall commissions typically run £2,400 to £5,000 depending on configuration, materials and the level of integration. A wall-mounted floating console with concealed cabling starts from £2,400; a full cinema wall with bookcase joinery, integrated speakers, lighting and a concealed equipment cupboard sits at the upper end, and the largest we have built have reached £15,000. Prices include VAT, delivery and installation. Every commission is priced after a home visit rather than by linear metre.

Sit in your usual seat and measure your eye height, then position the centre of the screen at or slightly below it — usually 900mm to 1,100mm from the floor for a sofa. Media walls are frequently mounted too high because people default to fireplace height, which produces neck strain over a long viewing session. We take these measurements during the home visit.

Six, and the right one depends on the room and how much you want the television to disappear. Wall-mounted floating keeps the floor clear. Drop-down console suits lower ceilings. Full bookcase wall integrates the TV into a library. Hidden cabinet conceals the screen behind doors when not in use. Corner solutions work in awkward returns. Full cinema wall is the most integrated option.

Yes. The most common approach is a pair of doors — sliding, bi-fold or pocket — that close across the screen, so the wall reads as ordinary cabinetry when the television is off. Pocket doors that slide back into the carcass are the neatest solution because nothing protrudes when open. Lifting and rotating mechanisms are also possible where the brief justifies them.

All cabling is routed within the joinery through concealed channels between the screen position and the equipment cupboard, so nothing is visible at any point. We plan cable routes at the design stage, including power, HDMI, network and speaker runs, and leave accessible service voids so equipment can be swapped later without dismantling anything. Mains work is completed by a qualified electrician.

Only if it's enclosed without provision for airflow, which is a common failing in cheaply built media units. We specify ventilated backs, rear service voids and, where equipment load justifies it, extraction fans, so amplifiers and consoles run at safe temperatures behind closed doors. Infrared repeaters are fitted where you need remote controls to work with the cabinet doors shut.

Yes, and electric fires are among the most requested additions. An electric fire has no flue requirement and produces limited heat, so it can be built into joinery with the correct clearances. A gas or solid-fuel fireplace is a different matter — building regulations govern clearances to combustible materials, and any joinery must be designed around a specification agreed with your heating engineer.

Yes, and this is where bespoke joinery earns its cost. Victorian and Edwardian chimney breasts create two alcoves of slightly different widths, which off-the-shelf units cannot fill neatly. We measure both and build to each, so the run reads as symmetrical even when the openings aren't. The chimney breast itself can carry the screen with flanking storage either side.

Most media walls are fitted within 21 days of confirming the order, with one to two days on site; a full-height wall with a fire, lighting circuits and cabling behind the panels can take a day longer. Your 3D design and quotation arrive within two to three days of the home visit.
