Fitted Bedroom Furniture: Planning a Whole Room, Not Just a Wardrobe

5 min readBy Metro Home Interiors

Most people start by asking for a wardrobe and end up with a bedroom. Once the wardrobe wall is drawn, the bedsides, the chest of drawers, the dressing table and the headboard are the same conversation: the same finish, the same handles, the same designer, fitted on the same day. The result is a room where nothing is freestanding and nothing gathers dust behind it. This guide covers what a fitted bedroom includes, how to plan it and what it costs.

A fitted bedroom, in short

  • One finish across wardrobes, bedsides, drawers, dressing table and headboard.
  • The bed is drawn first; everything is set out from it.
  • Built-in bedsides with sockets and lighting replace two pieces of furniture and their cables.
  • A dressing table or a desk under the window uses the wall a wardrobe cannot.
  • The wardrobe wall from £900 per metre; bedsides from £690, chests from £1,150 and dressing tables from £1,450 are itemised alongside. Prices include VAT and installation.

Start with the bed

Everything in a bedroom is arranged around the one thing that cannot move. The designer draws the bed first, at its real size, then the walkways around it (600mm minimum, 750mm comfortable), then the wardrobe wall, then the smaller pieces. If the bed wall is the only long wall, the scheme becomes an over-bed run. If there is a chimney breast, the alcoves become the wardrobes and the breast takes the dressing table.

The pieces

  • Wardrobes: the main run, floor to ceiling. Hinged, sliding or a mix.
  • Bedsides: built into the wardrobe towers or as floating drawers on a headboard panel, with sockets and reading lights wired in.
  • Headboard panel: a padded, fluted or panelled backdrop between the bedsides, lit from above.
  • Chest of drawers: a bank of deep drawers within the run or a low unit under the window.
  • Dressing table: a lit mirror, a shallow drawer for jewellery and make-up, and a knee space, set into the run or into the chimney breast.
  • Desk: in a guest or teenage room, a work surface at 720mm with drawers beneath.
  • Window seat: a padded bench with drawers below, using the wall the window occupies. See window seating.

One finish, or two

A single finish across every piece makes the room calm and larger. The way to add interest is texture rather than a second colour: a fluted headboard panel in the same paint, an oak interior showing through a lit niche, brass handles against a deep green. Where two finishes are used, keep the wardrobes in the quieter one and let the smaller pieces carry the accent. The colour guide has combinations that work.

Lighting and power

A fitted bedroom moves the lighting off the ceiling. Reading lights come out of the headboard panel; sockets and USB sit inside the bedside niches; the dressing-table mirror is lit from its edge; the wardrobe interiors light as they open. All of it is wired at installation and the cables disappear. See the lighting guide.

Rooms other than the master

A guest room gains a desk and a sofa-bed wall of shallow cupboards; a teenager's room gains a desk, a bookcase and a wardrobe in one run; a small second bedroom becomes an over-bed scheme. The children's room guide and small-bedroom guide cover them.

What a fitted bedroom costs

A double wardrobe about one metre wide starts from around £900 at Level 3 of our price guide. Whole-bedroom sets add bedsides from £690 and a dressing table from £1,450 to the wardrobe wall. A master bedroom suite with a long wardrobe run, built-in bedsides, headboard panel and dressing table is priced piece by piece: a four-metre wardrobe run from £3,600 at Level 3, rising by door style. All prices include VAT and installation. Browse fitted bedroom furniture or see the price guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in fitted bedroom furniture?

Wardrobes, bedsides, a headboard panel, a chest of drawers, a dressing table and, where wanted, a desk or window seat, all in one finish and installed together.

How much does a fully fitted bedroom cost?

The wardrobe wall is priced from £900 per metre including VAT and installation; bedsides from £690, chests from £1,150 and dressing tables from £1,450 are itemised alongside.

Should all bedroom furniture match?

One finish across every piece makes a room calmer and larger. Add interest with texture, a fluted headboard or a lit oak niche, rather than a second colour.

Do fitted bedsides have sockets?

Yes. Sockets and USB ports are wired into the bedside niches and reading lights into the headboard panel at installation, so cables disappear.
