Mayfair Island Dresser London

The Mayfair is the piece that turns a walk-in wardrobe into a dressing room. It stands in the middle of the floor, reached from every side, with drawers on both long faces: shallow ones at the top for jewellery, watches and glasses, deeper ones below for knitwear, belts and scarves. The top is a slab of book-matched marble at 900mm, a counter for folding, for packing and for laying out what is worn tomorrow.

The oak is a warm, straight-grained veneer with a framed front on every drawer, and the brass bars sit on one line down each face. On a rug in the centre of the room, with the wardrobes around it, it reads as a piece of furniture rather than a unit.

How it works: a double-sided carcass with a centre divider, so each long face carries its own bank of drawers on full-extension soft-close runners: two shallow drawers of 100mm at the top with lined inserts, and two deep drawers of 220mm below. The ends are finished panels; the marble top is 20mm on a plywood sub-top with a 20mm overhang and a polished edge. The island stands on a recessed plinth and is levelled on adjustable feet.

Designed for the room around it

An island needs floor: 900mm of clear walkway on every side, so the drawers open with the wardrobe doors behind you. A room 3.0 metres wide takes an island with storage on one wall; 3.6 metres takes one with wardrobes on both. The Mayfair is drawn to the floor those walls leave, usually 600 deep and 900 to 1,500 long.

Designed for the room: the island can be longer with a third bank, one-sided against a wall as a peninsula, topped in quartz or timber, lit under the plinth, or made in walnut or a painted colour to match the wardrobes around it. A glass-lidded jewellery drawer and a charging drawer are options.

Built for everyday use: the marble is sealed and the sub-top takes its weight, the runners take a drawer full of knitwear, and the corners are eased where they meet a hip.

The Mayfair is cut and built as one piece in our HA9 Wembley factory, with the drawers fitted and the top templated to it; it is delivered through your door and set on its feet in the centre of the room.
