Fitted furniture for Abridge, made twenty miles away in Wembley.

Abridge is a Roding Valley village in Epping Forest. Period cottages along the main street, detached houses and 1930s homes, with bay windows, chimney-breast alcoves and the odd loft conversion. Metro covers Abridge from its Wembley HA9 workshop and templates every piece to your room.

Core service

Fitted Wardrobes

The most common job we do in RM4. Ten ranges across hinged, sliding, and walk-in builds. Every unit is cut to the room's actual dimensions and delivered in sections small enough for a Georgian staircase. Where original cornicing exists, the wardrobe stops below it with a clean shadow gap.

Solid 18mm carcase, hand-painted in Farrow & Ball or Little Greene.

Fitted Kitchens

We started as a wardrobe specialist. Kitchens followed naturally. A big share of our RM4 kitchen work happens in Victorian galleys being opened up, and in canal-side conversions where the cabinetry has to slot in around immovable services. We build the cabinetry. You choose worktops, appliances, and splashbacks.

Living & Media Walls

A category that's grown a lot since 2020. Media walls in living rooms, home offices in reception rooms, alcove cabinets flanking original fireplaces, full bedroom suites. Most of these come up as a second project once the wardrobes are in.

London manufacturing · RM4 design

What Abridge homes demand of a fitted-furniture maker.

Abridge's housing has recurring quirks. Here is how our workshop handles each on a RM4 project.

A bay window swallows the best wall in the bedroom.
Bay windows Abridge design constraint · 01

A bay window swallows the best wall in the bedroom.

The Abridge problem

The front bedroom of a Abridge house is often dominated by a splayed bay window. It is the obvious wall for a wardrobe, but a standard unit either blocks the window or leaves awkward dead returns to each side.

Metro's manufacturing answer

We fit floor-to-ceiling wardrobes tight to each side wall flanking the bay, with a low fitted seat and drawers across the bay itself. The window stays clear and the whole wall works as one run.

The chimney-breast alcoves are never the same width.
Chimney alcoves Abridge design constraint · 02

The chimney-breast alcoves are never the same width.

The Abridge problem

Like most period Abridge terraces, the back bedroom has a chimney breast with an alcove either side, and the two are rarely equal. One standard carcase for both leaves filler strips on one side and a unit that will not shut on the other.

Metro's manufacturing answer

Each alcove is templated and built on its own, filled floor-to-ceiling and wall to chimney breast. Two different carcases that read as a matched pair from the doorway.

Loft bedrooms lose half the wall to a sloping ceiling.
Loft conversions Abridge design constraint · 03

Loft bedrooms lose half the wall to a sloping ceiling.

The Abridge problem

A Abridge loft conversion adds a bedroom but a sloping ceiling that cuts the usable wall height in half. Freestanding wardrobes simply will not stand under the slope.

Metro's manufacturing answer

We scribe the wardrobe into the eaves, following the roof pitch so units run from floor to slope with no gap above. The lowest part becomes drawers and shoe storage instead of dead space.

Best-suited Metro ranges for RM4

Which Metro ranges fit Abridge homes best?

The ranges we recommend more than any others in RM4, based on what the area's property actually demands.

Hinged Shaker

Best for semis

Our default for period and inter-war bedrooms, painted in Farrow & Ball or Little Greene, sitting neatly into bays and alcoves.

Loft & Eaves

Best for conversions

Angled units scribed to the roof pitch for loft bedrooms, turning the low eaves into drawers and storage.

Built-In

Best for alcoves

Chimney-breast alcove wardrobes templated individually, filled floor-to-ceiling with no filler strips.

Sliding Wardrobes

Best for small rooms

Where a back bedroom is tight, floor-to-ceiling sliders avoid door swing and add a mirror for light.

How Abridge homes actually use Metro

Common Abridge wardrobe scenarios.

Most RM4 enquiries fall into a handful of property situations. Below is what each typically looks like.

Scenario 01

Front bedroom with a splayed bay

The situation: A family on the village wanted storage on the bay wall. A chain quote blocked half the window with a standard unit.

What they got: Two floor-to-ceiling wardrobes flanking the bay with a fitted window seat and drawers across it. Hand-painted, brass handles. The bay stays the feature of the room.

Range: Shaker Project size: ~£5,200
Scenario 02

Back bedroom with unequal chimney alcoves

The situation: Owners frustrated that two previous quotes used one carcase size for both alcoves, leaving gaps.

What they got: Each alcove templated separately and filled floor-to-ceiling under the picture rail. Two carcases that line up perfectly from the doorway.

Range: Built-In Project size: ~£4,300
Scenario 03

Loft-conversion main bedroom under the slope

The situation: A new Abridge loft bedroom where freestanding wardrobes could not stand under the sloping ceiling.

What they got: Wardrobes scribed into the eaves following the roof pitch, the low end built out as drawers. Floor-to-slope, no dead space.

Range: Loft & Eaves Project size: ~£6,100
Scenario 04

Tight box bedroom needing mirror sliders

The situation: A small third bedroom where hinged doors fouled the bed.

What they got: Floor-to-ceiling sliding wardrobe with one mirror panel and internal drawers. Built wall-to-wall with no door swing.

Range: Sliding Door Project size: ~£4,000
From Metro clients

What homeowners say after working with us.

Amazing experience and highly recommended

"It was a wonderful experience to design my 4 wardrobes with Palak (Metro Wardrobes). They are expert in what they do. I got such a lovely input from Palak and full flexibility while designing my wardrobe. I would like to complement the whole team right from the owner James to the fitting person Sumit, and last but not the least Sameer and Jinal. It was very homely talking to each one of them. I have already received lot of compliments. "

Excellent service and products

"Highly recommend them! Our designer, Nassy, visited our house and took measurements. We later met her at their showroom, where we were able to see the quality of the material and choose the colours. Nassy also sent us a 3D render of what the wardrobe would look like, which helped us visualize the end product. The fitting team was a delight! They made sure we were happy with the end result and left the apartment immaculately clean. "

Abridge: common questions

A few things RM4 clients tend to ask.

Can you fit a wardrobe around the bay window in my house?
Yes. We build floor-to-ceiling wardrobes tight to each side wall flanking the bay, with a low fitted seat and drawers across the bay itself. The window stays clear and the whole wall becomes one run.
My chimney-breast alcoves are different widths. Will it still look even?
That is normal in period terraces. We template each alcove separately and build two different carcases, both filled floor-to-ceiling, so they read as a matched pair even though the sizes differ.
Can you fit wardrobes into my loft conversion with its sloping ceiling?
Yes. We scribe the units into the eaves following the roof pitch, so they run from floor to slope with no gap above. The lowest part becomes drawers and shoe storage.
Will the panels get up to a loft room on a narrow staircase?
Yes. We measure the staircase and turns on the visit, then cut each carcase into 400mm sections small enough to carry up. Our fitters assemble them in the room.
How much does a fitted wardrobe in Abridge cost?
Most RM4 projects fall between £3,500 and £7,500, depending on size, range, finish and internal fit-out. Loft and bay projects sit a little higher. Every quote is fixed and itemised before you sign.
What's the difference between Metro and a national chain like Hammonds or Sharps?
We make in London, twenty miles away in Wembley, not a Midlands factory. Every piece is cut for your exact room, and the team that designs, builds and fits is all ours, with no subcontractors.
Do you cover Abridge and the surrounding Roding Valley villages?
Yes. Abridge is within our regular coverage; we visit, build in Wembley and fit with our own team just as we would in town.
