Equal 3 Sliding Wardrobe Doors, Made to Measure in London

Each door divided into three panels of the same height by two cross rails. The layout for tall rooms, where two panels would look stretched, and for anyone who wants a stronger horizontal rhythm.

Equal 3 · The door

The Equal 3 door, drawn

Two 30mm cross rails divide the face into three panels of equal height. On a 2400mm opening each panel is 734mm; on a 2600mm opening, 801mm. The rails land at roughly 800mm and 1560mm from the floor, so the middle panel sits between waist and eye level and the top panel above head height. Woodgrain top and bottom with mirror in the middle gives a mirror at exactly the height you use one, framed by timber, which is why Equal 3 is often chosen where a full-height mirror would feel like too much.

Panels per door three, equal · Panel height 734mm each on a 2400mm opening, 801mm on 2600mm · Rails two, at about 800mm and 1560mm · Best above 2500mm openings

Equal 3 · What to get right

Getting an Equal 3 door right

Six things a designer checks before a three-panel door is drawn.

01

Ceiling height

Equal 3 comes into its own above about 2500mm. On a 2400mm opening the panels are 734mm and the door is busy; on 2700mm they are 834mm and the proportion is right.

02

The middle panel

This is the one at eye level, roughly 800 to 1560mm from the floor. Mirror here shows head and shoulders; frosted glass lights the room; woodgrain makes a quiet door.

03

Two rails, one drawing

Both rails on every door are machined to the same digital drawing, so across a run of three doors the six rail ends meet as two unbroken lines.

04

Frame quantity

Three panels means four horizontal frame members per door. In black that is a strong grid; in silver or champagne it recedes.

05

Panel weight

Three smaller panels are lighter and flatter than one tall one, which matters for wide doors of 1200mm or more.

06

Squares and rectangles

On a 1030mm door the 734mm panels are landscape. On a narrower two-door run they approach squares, which reads differently and is worth drawing before deciding.

Equal 3 · Across the run

Three Equal 3 doors on one opening

Across a 3000mm opening the three 1030mm doors carry two rail lines that run unbroken from wall to wall, dividing the whole face into three long bands. The middle door sits on the back track, 88mm behind the others, and each meeting overlaps by 45mm. With mirror in the middle band the effect is a horizontal mirror strip across the room at eye level, with timber above and below; with all three bands in one material it is a simple grid of nine panels.

Equal 3 · Planning

Planning an Equal 3 wardrobe

Five decisions, in the order your designer makes them.

01
Measure the height
Equal 3 is drawn for openings of 2500mm and above. Below that, Equal or Central 400 gives better proportions.
02
Choose the middle band
Mirror at eye level is the classic; frosted glass or woodgrain make a quieter door.
03
Choose the outer bands
Usually the same material top and bottom so the door reads as symmetrical. Two tones of the same woodgrain work well.
04
Check the room lines
Picture rails, window heads and door frames at around 1560mm or 800mm should either align with a rail or clear it.
05
Set the interior
Three bands on the door do not dictate three shelves inside. Hanging, drawers and shelving follow what you own.
York sliding wardrobe: walnut and frosted glass banded sliding doors with black rails
Equal 3 · Built

Banded doors, built

The York shows what aligned bands do across a run: walnut woodgrain top and bottom, frosted glass between, black rails machined to one drawing so the horizontals read as continuous lines rather than two doors pushed together. It is 3000mm wide, 2400mm high and from £4,995 fitted.

Equal 3 uses two rails to make three bands of the same height. It is the layout to reach for in a tall Victorian or Edwardian room, where a two-panel door would leave each panel over 1200mm high.

Equal 3 · FAQ

Questions about the Equal 3 layout.

A sliding door divided into three panels of equal height by two horizontal cross rails. On a 2400mm opening each panel is about 734mm; on 2600mm, about 801mm. Each of the three panels can be a different material, so the common arrangement is woodgrain above and below a mirror or frosted glass middle.

When the ceiling is above about 2500mm. Two panels on a tall door each end up over 1200mm high and look stretched; three panels keep each one near 800mm, which sits comfortably with the proportions of a tall room. Below 2400mm, three panels get small and Equal is the better door.

At one third and two thirds of the door height: roughly 800mm and 1560mm from the floor on a 2400mm opening, or 870mm and 1700mm on a 2600mm one. That puts the middle panel between waist and eye level, which is where a mirror is most useful.

Yes. Every panel is chosen independently. Woodgrain top and bottom with silver, grey or bronze mirror in the middle is the most popular Equal 3 arrangement, because it gives a usable mirror at head height without turning the whole wall into a reflection.

Yes. Every rail is machined to the same digital drawing before the doors are assembled, so with the doors closed the two horizontals run unbroken across two, three or four doors. It is the most demanding part of making banded doors and the reason they are made to measure rather than cut on site.

Banded doors cost more than single-panel doors because there are more rails and more panels to cut and fit. As a guide, sliding wardrobes start from £900 per metre (Level 3 of our price guide, or £1,020 per metre with mirror or glass doors at Level 4), fitted and a three-door banded wardrobe about 3000mm wide is typically in the range of the York at £4,995.
