York Sliding Wardrobe

The York is the one that shows what a horizontal configuration can do. Each of its two doors is divided into bands — walnut woodgrain top and bottom, frosted glass through the middle — with black rails drawing the lines between them. It is closer to a piece of joinery than to a wardrobe front.

How it works: the bands are separate panels held in a black aluminium framework rather than a pattern printed on one board. Walnut woodgrain on 18mm MFC fills the top and bottom, frosted mirror glass fills the middle, and the rails between them are structural as well as visual. Both doors run on their own tracks behind the 200mm-wide MFC supporting frame.

Frosted glass rather than clear mirror is what makes the banding work. It returns light without returning a reflection, so the horizontal rhythm stays readable instead of dissolving into a picture of the room — and the walnut bands top and bottom give the composition somewhere to land.

Designed around how you use your room

Two wide doors rather than three narrow ones means two deep bays behind them, which changes how the inside is planned. Depending on your design, the York can include:

  • Long-hang sections for coats and dresses
  • Double-hang runs for shirts and jackets
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Internal drawers
  • Shoe storage
  • Accessory compartments
  • Internal lighting
  • Full-height storage above the hanging rails

Built for everyday use: the York shown here is finished in walnut woodgrain inside and out and measures 3000mm wide × 2400mm high × 600mm deep, with two doors rather than three so each band runs uninterrupted across a wide leaf.

The run is built to your room, and the band proportions are set at design stage rather than taken from a standard — how deep the walnut sections are and where the glass begins is part of the drawing, not a fixed template.

Horizontal is only one arrangement. The same framework can be set out vertically, mixed with mirror instead of frosted glass, and framed in Silver, White, Black Gloss, Black Matt, Champagne, Cashmere or Gun Metal.

Manufactured in our Wembley workshop

Your wardrobe is made to measure and precision-manufactured in our HA9 Wembley factory. A banded door is the most demanding thing we make in this range. Every rail has to line up across both leaves, so that when the doors sit closed the horizontals read as continuous lines rather than as two separate doors pushed together.

Our beam saw plans the walnut cut so the grain runs consistently across both doors, intelligent CNC and 6-side drilling machine the framework and fixing points, and industrial edge-banding finishes each component.

Every wardrobe is measured and designed around your actual room before manufacture and professional installation.

Quality you can rely on: your Metro fitted wardrobe comes with a 10-Year Parts and Labour Guarantee, giving you additional confidence in your investment.

Where We Work

Serving London & Surrounding Areas

Band proportions are the whole design here, so they are drawn before anything is cut — where the glass begins relative to eye level changes the wardrobe completely. Your designer sets that out with you at the home visit, working from the wall as measured rather than from a standard elevation.

“We had 2 wardrobes and a dressing table fitted from Metro. The fitters were very friendly and professional. The fitting team was also knowledgeable and they finished everything sooner than expected. The dressing table was left off of the order, but has been ordered and fitted in few days. Really impressed with the turnaround time with Metro. All in all a great experience. Would highly recommend them.”

“I was very pleased with my wardrobe fitted by Metro. By having a custom design I could have exactly the spacing and layout I wanted. They came out to me so we could match the colour to my existing inbuilt wardrobe. Any changes I wanted in the design Mike was quick to do and send me updated previews. It also came in considerably cheaper than a well known wardrobes brand. A couple of snagging issues as you'd expect, and other than some mild chasing I had to do they put it right and all was good. I'd happily recommend them.”

“Excellent from start to finish!! James visited on Saturday to quote and design. On Monday I called to book and today (Wed) 3 people of his team completed my fitted wardrobe. Team was very clean and mindful when moving things around and did an amazing job. Expectations met and exceeded at a very good price. Definitely recommend for high standards.”

Frequently Asked Questions

York Sliding Wardrobe FAQs

What is a horizontally banded sliding door?
A door built from separate panels stacked in bands rather than one full-height sheet. On the York the top and bottom bands are walnut woodgrain and the middle bands are frosted glass, with black rails dividing them.
Why frosted glass rather than mirror?
Frosted glass returns light without returning a reflection. On a banded door that matters — a clear mirror would dissolve the horizontal rhythm into a picture of the room, whereas frosted glass keeps the bands readable.
Will the rails line up across both doors?
Yes, and it is the most demanding part of making them. Every rail is machined to the same digital drawing so that with the doors closed the horizontals read as continuous lines rather than two doors pushed together.
Can the bands be a different size or arrangement?
Yes. Band depths and the point where the glass begins are set at design stage rather than taken from a template, and the same framework can be arranged vertically instead of horizontally.
How much does the York cost?
The layout shown — 3000mm wide, 2400mm high and 600mm deep — is from £4,995 including delivery and installation. Every wardrobe is made to measure, so your exact price is confirmed in writing after the free home design visit.
