What Islington homes demand of a fitted-furniture maker.

Islington's housing is old, narrow and full of original features people want to keep. That shapes how we build. Below are the three constraints that come up on almost every N1 project, and how our workshop handles them.

Original working shutters and tall sashes have to stay clear.

The Islington problem

Walk into a first-floor bedroom on a Barnsbury or Canonbury square and the window is the room: a tall Georgian sash, often with the original folding shutters still boxed into the reveal. Run a standard wardrobe along that wall and it covers the shutter box or jams the sash. The feature that dates the house to the 1840s disappears behind a flat-pack carcase.

Metro's design answer

We build the wall as one integrated run: floor-to-ceiling wardrobes tight to each side wall, scribed to stop at the shutter box, with a low fitted drawer-and-seat unit under the sash between them. The shutters still fold, the sash still slides, and not a centimetre of the wall is left as dead space.

Chimney breasts Islington design constraint · 02

No two chimney-breast alcoves in an Islington terrace are the same width.

The Islington problem

Islington's Georgian and Victorian terraces almost all have a chimney breast in the principal bedroom, with an alcove either side. They are never equal. One side commonly runs 80 to 120mm wider than the other. A standard carcase ordered for both leaves one alcove packed out with filler strips and the other unable to close.

Metro's design answer

Each alcove is measured and templated on its own, then filled floor-to-ceiling, wall to chimney breast, with no gaps to either side. The workshop builds two different carcases to the millimetre. From the doorway they read as a symmetrical pair, even though nothing behind the doors is the same size.

Lower-ground garden flats lose 400mm of height and gain a damp wall.

The Islington problem

A large share of Islington's Georgian houses are split into flats, and the lower-ground "garden" flat is the trickiest. Ceilings drop to around 2.3m, the front wall backs onto an under-pavement vault, and the external wall can carry damp. An off-the-shelf wardrobe is the wrong height and leaves dead corners around the vault.

Metro's manufacturing answer

We build the run wall-to-wall and to the real 2.3m height, with a ventilated back so air moves behind the cabinets rather than trapping damp. Where the under-pavement vault cuts into the wall, we scribe the units around it and shelve the recess out as usable storage instead of losing it.

Victorian terrace master bedroom with chimney breast alcoves

The situation: Couple in a four-bedroom Victorian terrace near Highbury Fields. The master bedroom had a chimney breast with mismatched alcoves either side, original cornicing they wanted to protect, and a window bay eating into one wall. Two national-chain quotes had failed already. One wanted to box the cornicing in. The other proposed standard 800mm carcases that wouldn't fit either alcove.

What they got: Two alcove wardrobes from our Shaker range, each templated independently. Hand-painted in Wimborne White. Cornicing left fully exposed with a clean shadow gap above each unit. Pull-down hanging rails inside, soft-close drawers, motion-sensor LED. Fitted within 21 days of design sign-off.

Scenario 02

Georgian house spare bedroom converted to walk-in dressing room

The situation: Owner of a three-storey Georgian house off Thornhill Square in Barnsbury wanted to convert the smallest bedroom, originally a nursery, into a proper walk-in dressing room. National brands wanted to put full-height units on three walls, which would have shrunk the room. The narrow staircase also ruled out delivering anything pre-assembled.

What they got: Walk-in layout built around a central island drawer unit, with open hanging on two walls. Carcases cut into 400mm sections at the workshop and assembled in the room by our fitters. French Grey, brushed-brass handles. Mirror-fronted central pillar with LED running the perimeter. Fitted within 21 days of design sign-off.

Scenario 03

City Road Basin warehouse conversion with services-bulkhead ceiling

The situation: Young professional in a one-bedroom canal-side flat near City Road Basin. The bedroom had a 3-metre ceiling height in the centre, but the wall where the wardrobe was going had a 600mm services-bulkhead drop running the full length. Standard full-height wardrobes wouldn't fit. Building everything to 2.4m would have wasted the room's best feature.

What they got: Floor-to-bulkhead Sliding Wardrobe in fluted oak veneer with smoked-bronze frames. Sits flush below the services drop with a precise shadow gap above. One mirror panel doubled the perceived width of the room. Fitted within 21 days of design sign-off.

Upper Street mansion block: full media wall with hidden storage

The situation: Family in a two-bedroom mansion-block flat off Upper Street. The living room had high ceilings and good proportions but no built-in storage. The TV sat on a freestanding unit that looked like it had moved in with them and never left. They wanted a media wall that looked like it had always been part of the room, plus concealed storage for board games, books and the cable mess.

What they got: Full-wall media unit with a central TV recess, floor-to-ceiling alcove cabinets either side for closed storage, open shelving above the TV for books and objects. Hand-painted in deep green to lift the existing room. Cable management routed behind the back panel, soft-close push-to-open drawers below, LED on the open shelves. Fitted within 21 days of design sign-off.

Islington: common questions

A few things N1 clients tend to ask.

Can you fit wardrobes around the original shutters and tall sash windows in a Georgian bedroom?

Yes. We measure the shutter box and window reveal on the design visit and stop the wardrobe run at that line, scribed with a shadow gap. The shutters still fold back into the box and the sash still slides. We never board over a working shutter to gain a few centimetres of hanging space.

My chimney-breast alcoves are different widths. Will a fitted wardrobe still look even?

That's the norm in Islington terraces, and it's exactly what bespoke is for. We template each alcove separately and build two different carcases, both stopping under the picture rail with a matched shadow gap. Behind the doors the sizes differ; from the room they read as a balanced pair.

I'm in a lower-ground garden flat with low ceilings and a slightly damp wall. Can you still fit a wardrobe?

Yes, and we treat it differently to an upper floor. We build to the real ceiling height, often around 2.3m, and build the carcase with a ventilated back so air moves behind it rather than trapping damp. If there's an under-pavement vault recess, we either box around it cleanly or shelve it out as storage.

Will the wardrobe panels get up a narrow Georgian staircase to the top floor?

Yes. We measure your staircase, half-landings and turns on the visit, then the workshop cuts each carcase into 400mm sections small enough to carry up three Islington flights by hand. Our fitters assemble them in the room, and once the doors are on you can't see the joins.

Can you match a fitted wardrobe to the period detail in my Islington home?

Yes. We work around original cornicing, picture rails, shutters and skirtings rather than removing them, and match in-frame doors and shadow gaps to the existing trim. Hand-painted finishes in any of our 100+ colours sit naturally alongside Georgian and Victorian detailing.
