Two 400 Sliding Wardrobe Doors, Made to Measure in London

Two 400mm bands on each door, one above and one below the centre. The boldest horizontal division of the twelve, and the one that carries best across a wide run of three or four doors.

Two 400 · The door

The Two 400 door, drawn

Four 30mm cross rails hold two fixed 400mm bands, and the three remaining panels share the rest in a proportion of roughly one to two to one: on a 2400mm opening, 336mm at the top, 672mm between the bands and 336mm at the bottom. The bands sit at about 420mm to 820mm and 1520mm to 1920mm above the floor, so the wide centre panel runs from thigh to eye level with a deep band above and below it. In woodgrain with frosted glass or mirror between, it is the strongest pattern a sliding door can carry, and on a run of three or four doors it reads as architecture rather than furniture.

Two 400 · What to get right

Getting a Two 400 door right

Six things a designer checks before a two-band door is drawn.

01

Run width

Two 400 needs width to work. On two doors the pattern can feel heavy; on three or four doors of 3000mm or more, the bands become long horizontals that settle the room.

02

Where the bands sit

Above and below the middle, leaving a taller field between and shorter fields at the ends. The proportion is set at the drawing and can shift to meet a sill or a headboard.

03

Bands and fields

Two materials: woodgrain or paint for the bands, glass or mirror for the fields, or a dark and a light paint. The bands are 800mm of every door, so they are half the look.

04

Frosted or mirror

Frosted glass keeps the five-band pattern readable. Mirror in the centre field only, between two timber bands, gives a reflection at eye level without dissolving the grid.

05

Ceiling height

Two 400 wants 2400mm and above. On 2200mm the outer fields drop to 286mm and read as strips; on 2600mm they are 386mm and the door is well proportioned.

06

Frame finish

Four rails per door. Black makes the bands read as one deep frame; silver, champagne or cashmere let the woodgrain lead.

Two 400 · Across the run

Three Two 400 doors on one opening

Across a 3000mm opening the four rails run unbroken at the same heights on all three 1030mm doors, so the run reads as five long bands from wall to wall: two deep bands of woodgrain with three fields of glass between and beyond them. The middle door sits on the back track, 88mm behind the outer two, and each meeting overlaps by 45mm. Fifteen panels and twelve rails have to align to the millimetre for the run to read as lines rather than doors, which is why every rail is machined to a single digital drawing before the doors are assembled.

Two 400 · Planning

Planning a Two 400 wardrobe

Five decisions, in the order your designer makes them.

01
Check the width
Two 400 is drawn for openings of 3000mm and more. On a narrower opening, Two 300 or Central 400 gives a lighter pattern.
02
Choose the fields
Frosted glass for light, mirror for depth in the centre field, paint or woodgrain for a solid face.
03
Choose the bands
Woodgrain or paint in contrast. At 800mm of every door they are half the design.
04
Set the proportion
One to two to one to start. The designer moves the bands to meet a sill, headboard or picture rail if the room asks for it.
05
Set the interior
The bands on the door do not dictate the inside. Hanging, drawers and shelving are set to what you own.
York sliding wardrobe: walnut and frosted glass banded sliding doors with black rails
Two 400 · Built

Two bands, built

The York is the two-band layout as made: walnut woodgrain bands at the top and bottom of each door, frosted glass between them, black rails machined to one drawing so the horizontals read as continuous lines across both doors. It is 3000mm wide, 2400mm high, 600mm deep and from £4,995 fitted.

Two 400 is the bolder proportion of the same idea, with 400mm bands set a little in from the ends of the door so a short field sits above and below each one. On three or four doors it is the most architectural of the twelve layouts.

“Excellent service from design consultation through to completion. Great value with superb quality fitted wardrobes. The designer - Nitesh - helped us maximise the available storage space without busting our budget. The crew led by Sandeep was very professional, meticulous in the build and left the house spotless. We selected the super matt finish which is a little bit more expensive but looks fantastic. Our bedroom is transformed in the best possible way.”

Two 400 · FAQ

Questions about the Two 400 layout.

A sliding door with two fixed 400mm bands, one above and one below the centre, held by four 30mm cross rails. The three remaining fields take the rest of the height in a proportion of about one to two to one: on a 2400mm opening, roughly 336mm, 672mm and 336mm. Bands are usually woodgrain or paint; fields are glass or mirror. It is the boldest horizontal layout Metro offers.

Because the bands become long horizontals. Two 800mm of timber across a single 1200mm door is a heavy pattern; the same bands running unbroken across three or four doors and 3000mm or more of wall read as lines that settle the whole room. On narrower openings Two 300 or Central 400 is lighter.

Yes, and the best place for it is the centre field alone, which sits from about thigh to eye height between the two bands. Frosted glass or paint in the two outer fields keeps the pattern readable. Mirror in all three fields dissolves the bands into a reflection of the room, which defeats the point of the layout.

About 2400mm and above. The two bands take 800mm and the four rails 120mm, so on a 2200mm opening the outer fields fall to about 286mm and read as strips. At 2400mm they are 336mm and at 2600mm about 386mm, which is where the door is best proportioned.

Yes. Every rail is machined to the same digital drawing before the doors are assembled, so with the doors closed the four horizontals run unbroken from wall to wall. It is the most demanding part of making banded doors, and the reason Metro makes them to measure in Wembley rather than cutting them on site.

Two-band doors carry four rails and five panels per door and sit at the upper end of banded door pricing. The York, a two-door banded wardrobe of 3000mm by 2400mm, is from £4,995 fitted with a 10-year guarantee. Every wardrobe is made to measure, so the exact price for your opening is confirmed in writing after the free home design visit.
