Ashdown Bay Window Seat London

The Ashdown Bay Window Seat is the day-bed version of a window seat: full length, mattress depth, upholstered from end to end, with deep drawers beneath it. It is built into the bay itself, and because a bay is never square, the carcass is templated on site to the angle of each return so the seat meets the bay on every side without a gap.

The fronts are graphite slab, push-to-open so there are no handles at shin height, and the seat is upholstered in a hard-wearing fabric chosen at the design visit, with the cushions made to the seat.

How it works: the seat is built as a run of solid-back carcasses, one to each face of the bay, with the returns mitred to the angle measured at the survey. The top is a solid 18mm board across the whole run with the upholstery fixed to it, and beneath it a bank of deep drawers runs on full-extension soft-close runners, so bedding, books and toys come out to you rather than being reached for. The carcasses are set off the bay wall with a ventilation gap, so the reveal stays dry behind the seat.

Where the bay has a radiator, the seat is built around it with a ventilated front, or the radiator is moved or replaced at the visit.

Designed around the bay

A bay collects the light and, in most London houses, nothing else. The Ashdown makes it the place the room gathers: a seat two people can share, a bed for an afternoon, and a bank of drawers under it that stores more than a chest.

Designed for the room: the depth is set to the bay, from 500mm for sitting to 750mm or more for lying down; the fronts can be doors with a lift-up lid instead of drawers, and the finish can match the room’s joinery or contrast with it.

Built for everyday use: the top is a board you lie on, not a lid on a box, the fronts carry a softened edge at shin height, and every carcass has a solid 18mm back, so the run stays square in a bay that is not.

The Ashdown shown is a three-face bay about 2.4 metres across; the same seat is drawn to your bay, curved or angled, at the design visit.

The Ashdown is cut in our HA9 Wembley factory from the template taken in your bay: every carcass panel is sawn to its own length and mitre angle, the runner positions are drilled on the CNC, and each visible edge is banded, so the run arrives as a set that fits the bay it was drawn for.

Each drawer box is built to the depth of its own face of the bay and hung on its runners before it leaves, and the top is banded before the upholsterer covers it.

Templating happens at the design visit, when the angle of each return, the sill height and the radiator are recorded; on installation the carcasses are scribed to the reveal.
