Hoxton Under Stairs Wardrobe London

The Hoxton is the under-stair wardrobe for a house that has no cloakroom: an open bay of hanging, shelves and drawers where the hoover cupboard used to be. Coats hang at the tall end on a rail at 1.8 metres, a column of pigeonholes takes bags, hats and helmets, drawers at the base take gloves and scarves, and the shelving steps down the stair line to a low shelf for boots.

It is finished in a light oak throughout, with the grain running vertically on the dividers and horizontally on the shelves, and it is lit from the front edge of every shelf, so the whole bay glows rather than sits as a dark hole in the hall. Without doors there is nothing to open with your hands full, which is the point of a cloakroom.

How it works: the bay is a set of vertical dividers fixed to the wall and to a floor plinth, with shelves between them at heights set by what they hold. The top of each division is cut to the underside of the stair, with a shadow gap to the stringer so the staircase is untouched. The rail is a solid oval bar on end brackets; the drawers run on full-extension soft-close runners; the LED strips sit in a channel routed into the front edge of each shelf and run from one sensor.

Where the hallway needs it, a shoe drawer with a slatted base is fitted at the floor so wet boots dry from beneath.

Designed for the front door

An open cloakroom is only tidy if everything has a place. The Hoxton is divided by use: hanging for coats, pigeonholes at the sizes of the bags and helmets the house actually owns, drawers for the small things, a bench-height shelf for sitting to put on shoes. The dividing is done from an inventory at the design visit, not from a standard grid.

Designed for the room: the bay can be closed with a single flush door where the hallway is narrow, the pigeonholes can become open cubbies for a family of small children, and the finish can be any of our woodgrains or painted colours with the interior kept in oak.

Built for everyday use: every shelf edge is banded in 2mm oak so it takes a bag being dropped on it, the rail is a solid bar rather than a tube, and the dividers are 18mm on solid backs so the bay is rigid without doors to brace it.

The Hoxton shown sits under a straight flight about 3.0 metres long with 2.2 metres at the tall end; the same bay is drawn to your staircase and your hallway at the design visit.

Manufactured in our Wembley workshop

The Hoxton is cut in our HA9 Wembley factory from the survey of your staircase. The dividers are cut to the stair pitch on the CNC and banded on every edge, the shelves are routed for their LED channels, and the drawers are assembled and fitted before the bay leaves the workshop, so the cloakroom arrives as a set of finished pieces.

The rail height, the pigeonhole sizes and the drawer count are set from your inventory at the visit, and the bay is scribed to the wall and the floor on installation.
