Primrose Under Stairs Wardrobe London

The Primrose is for the room where the staircase comes down along one wall: a bedroom, a landing or an open-plan hall where a wardrobe is needed and the space under the stairs is going to waste beside it. The wardrobe runs full height along the wall, turns under the stairs without a break, and steps down the flight with doors cut to each tread.

Where the stair meets the floor, the last triangle is too low for a door, so it is left open as stepped shelving, lit from above, for the things worth seeing. A mirror door in the run doubles the room and gives the wardrobe its purpose as a dressing wardrobe. The finish is a blush pink matt with slim black bar handles.

How it works: the run is a set of full-height carcasses along the wall, each with a rail and shelves, continuing under the stairs as carcasses cut to the underside of the flight. The stepped doors are cut to their triangles on the CNC, and the open shelving in the last bay is built as a stepped set of boxes with an LED strip under each step. The mirror door is a 4mm mirror bonded to an 18mm door on concealed soft-close hinges, so it opens like any other door.

A 10mm shadow gap follows the stringer along the whole run, so the staircase is never touched and the wardrobe reads as fitted to it rather than against it.

Designed as one run, not two

A wardrobe on the wall and a cupboard under the stairs beside it are two pieces of furniture that never quite agree. The Primrose is drawn as one: the same doors, the same handles, the same top line until the stair interrupts it, and then the doors follow the stair. It is the layout that makes a staircase in a bedroom look intended.

Designed for the room: the mirror door can be any door in the run, the open shelving can be closed with a low door where the room is used by small children, and the whole run can be any of our painted colours or woodgrains with the interior kept in oak.

Built for everyday use: the mirror is bonded to a full door rather than hung as glass, the stepped doors carry the same soft-close hinges as the tall ones, and the open shelves are 18mm boards banded on every edge so they take being leant on.

The Primrose shown runs about 3.6 metres along the wall and 2.4 metres under the stair; the same run is drawn to your wall, your ceiling and your staircase at the design visit.

Manufactured in our Wembley workshop

The Primrose is cut in our HA9 Wembley factory from the survey of your wall and your staircase. The tall doors and the stepped doors are cut on the same machine from the same board, so the colour and the grain match along the run, and the mirror door is bonded and hung in the workshop.

The stair pitch, the tread positions, the ceiling height and the skirting are measured at your design visit, and the run is scribed to the wall, the ceiling and the stringer on installation.
