Kensington Island Kitchen London

The Kensington Island Kitchen is planned for an open-plan room with light from above. A long run of pale sage handleless cabinets lines the back wall under a row of roof lights, and a matching island stands in the middle of the floor with a white quartz top that overhangs at one end to make a breakfast bar for two stools. The plinth of the island is lit, so at night the island appears to float.

The finish is a pale sage slab with a routed handleless rail along the top of every door and drawer, so the run reads as flat planes of colour with a shadow line between them. The fridge-freezer tower at the end of the run is black, and the oven stack beside it is set at eye level in a tall housing.

How it works: the base units are made-to-measure carcasses with a continuous handleless rail routed into the top edge of each front, so there is nothing to catch a sleeve on and the doors open on a fingertip. Drawers run on full-extension soft-close runners; doors hang on concealed soft-close hinges. The island is a freestanding run of drawers and cupboards on both sides, with a hob on the room side and the breakfast overhang supported on concealed steel brackets.

The quartz worktop is templated once the cabinets are fitted and returns up the wall as a matching upstand under the wall units.

Designed around how you cook and gather

An island kitchen works when the island does two jobs: the hob and preparation on the working side, and a place to sit and talk on the other. The Kensington keeps the sink and the ovens on the back run so the cook faces the room.

Designed for the room: the island is sized to the floor, with 1,000mm clear on every walked side and 1,200mm where the dishwasher opens into the gap. Where the room is narrower, the same run becomes a peninsula that returns to the wall.

Built for a working kitchen: the carcasses are 18mm board with solid 18mm backs, the drawer boxes are full-extension so the back of a pan drawer is as usable as the front, and the handleless rail is routed into the front rather than clipped on, so it cannot work loose.

The Kensington shown has a back run of about 4.2 metres and an island of 2.4 metres. The same pieces are drawn to your room at the design visit.

Manufactured in our Wembley workshop

Every panel of the Kensington is cut in our HA9 Wembley factory to the survey of your room: the beam saw sizes every carcass panel, the CNC routes the handleless rail into each front and drills the hinge and runner positions, and the edge-bander finishes every visible edge, so the run and the island arrive as one matched set.

The island carcasses are built as a single unit in the workshop and the breakfast overhang is engineered for the quartz before the stone is templated.

At the design visit we record the room, the roof lights, the services and the appliance models; on installation the run and the island are scribed to the walls and the floor.
