Top 400 Sliding Wardrobe Doors, Made to Measure in London
A 400mm panel across the top of each door, with one large panel below it. The header-band layout: a line above head height that finishes the wardrobe like a cornice, often in a contrasting woodgrain.
The Top 400 door, drawn
The cross rail sits 400mm below the top rail, so the upper panel is a fixed 400mm band and the lower panel takes the rest: 1833mm on a 2400mm opening, 2033mm on 2600mm. The band sits above head height, between about 1900mm and the ceiling, which is why it is usually woodgrain or a painted board rather than mirror: nobody needs a reflection there, and a solid band draws a line at the top of the wardrobe the way a cornice finishes a room. Below it a mirror or glass panel runs from the floor rail to 1900mm, which still gives a full-length reflection.

Getting a Top 400 door right
Six things a designer checks before a header-band door is drawn.
The header line
The rail lands at about 1900mm from the floor, above head height. Door frames and window heads in the room are often close to that, and the band should align with them or clearly clear them.
What the band is
Woodgrain or a painted board almost always. Mirror above head height reflects the ceiling and little else; glass there is wasted.
The mirror below
A mirror from 56mm to 1900mm shows a full figure from two metres away. The band above it stops the mirror running into the ceiling, which many people find calmer.
Cornice and coving
Where the room has coving, a woodgrain header band echoes it. Where the ceiling is plain, the band gives the wardrobe a top edge of its own.
Tall rooms
Top 400 is fixed at the top, so the lower panel grows with the ceiling. Above about 2700mm the lower panel passes 2100mm and Two 400 or Central 400 divides the height better.
Reading across the run
The band runs unbroken across every door at one height, so a three-door run reads as a long header over three tall panels.
The Top 400 door at three ceiling heights
How the Top 400 door divides at three common opening heights, drawn as three doors on a 3000mm opening. Panels are listed from the top of the door down.
| Opening | Door | Panels, top to bottom |
|---|---|---|
| 2200mm opening | 2140mm high × 1030mm wide, three doors on 3000mm | 400mm woodgrain · 1633mm mirror |
| 2400mm opening Most rooms | 2340mm high × 1030mm wide, three doors on 3000mm | 400mm woodgrain · 1833mm mirror |
| 2600mm opening | 2540mm high × 1030mm wide, three doors on 3000mm | 400mm woodgrain · 2033mm mirror |
Three Top 400 doors on one opening
Across a 3000mm opening the 400mm header runs as one line at the top of all three 1030mm doors, and the three tall lower panels sit beneath it. The middle door is on the back track, 88mm behind the outer two, and every meeting overlaps by 45mm. Because the band is at the top, the run reads as a piece of furniture with a top rail rather than as a wall of mirror, and the lower panels do the work of opening the room.
Door width 1030mm, three on 3000mm · Bands across the run two, the upper one 400mm · Rail height about 1900mm from the floor · Tracks two, 45mm overlaps
Planning a Top 400 wardrobe
Five decisions, in the order your designer makes them.

Banded doors, built
The York carries woodgrain bands at the top and the bottom of each door with frosted glass between, black rails machined to one drawing so the lines run across both doors. It is 3000mm wide, 2400mm high and from £4,995 fitted.
Top 400 keeps only the upper band. It gives the wardrobe a finished top edge above head height and leaves the rest of the door to a single tall panel, which is why it is chosen where a full-height mirror would run straight into the ceiling.

Questions about the Top 400 layout.
A sliding door with a fixed 400mm panel across the top and one large panel below it, divided by a 30mm cross rail. The header band is usually woodgrain or a painted board; the panel below is usually mirror or glass. On a 2400mm opening the lower panel is about 1833mm high and the rail sits at roughly 1900mm from the floor.
For the line it draws. A band above head height finishes the wardrobe like a cornice and stops a mirror from running into the ceiling, which makes a tall run feel calmer. A band at the bottom is chosen for wear rather than looks. If you want both, Two 400 puts a band at each end of the middle panel.
Yes. The mirror runs from just above the floor to about 1900mm, which shows a full figure from two metres away. You lose only the reflection of the ceiling.
Woodgrain or an 18mm painted board. A walnut or oak woodgrain header over a mirror is the classic; a header painted in the wall colour makes the wardrobe read as part of the room. Mirror or glass above head height adds nothing you can see.
Slightly more than a single-panel door of the same size, for the extra rail and panel. Sliding wardrobes start from £900 per metre (Level 3 of our price guide, or £1,020 per metre with mirror or glass doors at Level 4), fitted with a 10-year guarantee, and a three-door banded wardrobe about 3000mm wide sits nearer the York at £4,995.
