Harlem Mirrored Fitted Wardrobe, Made to Measure in London

The Mirrored Fitted Wardrobe puts the mirror inside the door rather than in place of it. On the Harlem, the mirror sits within the five-piece shaker frame as the centre panel, so the run keeps its stiles and rails and the room gets its reflection without a single flat sheet of glass anywhere.

The arrangement shown does something most fitted wardrobes avoid: it carries straight on over the bedroom door. A row of top boxes bridges the doorway, and the hanging runs continue either side of it, so a wall that would normally be broken into two short wardrobes becomes one continuous piece.

How it works: the Harlem is a genuine five-piece door — two stiles, two rails and a floating centre panel — cut from 22mm E1-grade MDF and jointed with 8mm beech dowels and PVA adhesive. Its 60mm stiles are the narrowest in our five-piece range, which is what lets the mirror panel take up most of the door.

The face is wrapped in an embossed-grain vinyl in Urban Oak, one of nine finishes held in stock. The emboss follows the grain print, so the surface reads as timber to the hand as well as the eye, and the 1mm ABS end caps are chamfered so the frame edges catch the light the way a machined timber edge does.

Slim brass bar handles run vertically on every door, including the top boxes, so the whole frontage reads as one rhythm from floor to ceiling.

A run that bridges a doorway is planned around the door first and the clothes second. The top boxes over the opening take luggage and out-of-season things; the tall bays either side take the everyday wardrobe.

Built for everyday use: a mirror inside a frame is protected by it. The stiles and rails take the knocks a full-face mirror door would take on its glass, and the door still opens on soft-close hinges like every other door in the run.

The wardrobe shown mixes mirrored and plain Harlem doors in the same Urban Oak, which is how most people specify it — mirror where you dress, plain where you do not need to see yourself. The interior finish is chosen at the design visit and can be matched to the doors or contrasted with them.

Bridging a doorway means the run has two datums — the floor and the door head — and the top boxes have to land exactly on the second one while the tall bays land on the first. Your Harlem is surveyed on site so both are taken from the room, and then manufactured in our HA9 Wembley factory to those figures.

The beam saw optimises each board to cut waste; CNC and six-sided drilling machine the components and every hinge and shelf position; and industrial edge-banding gives every visible edge the same finish. On a mirrored door the machining also has to leave the panel rebate true, or the glass does not sit flat in its frame.
