Inside the Bastille door

The Bastille is the real thing: five separate pieces — two 84mm French-cut stiles, two rails and a floating 6mm centre panel — joined with 8mm beech dowels and PVA glue, exactly as traditional joinery is made. Every piece is cut from 22mm E1-grade MDF and wrapped in 0.2mm embossed-grain textured vinyl, with matching heat-transfer film on the rail edges, 2mm ABS end caps and chamfered edges. A fine bead runs along each shoulder — the detail that gives the door its name. The centre panel’s grain always runs vertical.

The Bastille delivers exactly that: a true five-piece beaded shaker door, its pieces dowelled and glued the way cabinetmakers have always worked, shown here in a smoked wood-effect finish with slim brass knobs.

The warmth of wood, engineered to last

The Wood Effect Fitted Wardrobe is the one in this range with a bead. On the Bastille a fine moulding runs around the inside edge of the frame where it meets the centre panel, which is the detail that separates a period panelled door from a plain shaker. It is small, and it is the whole character of the door.

The finish shown is a dark smoked-oak effect with the grain running vertically on every component, which is how the Bastille is always made — the stiles, rails and panel all read in the same direction, so the door looks like it was cut from one board rather than assembled from five.

How it works: the Bastille is French-cut, meaning the rails are shaped to receive the stiles rather than butting square against them, and the five pieces are jointed with 8mm beech dowels and PVA adhesive. The stiles are 84mm wide and the door is 22mm thick in E1-grade MDF, with a 6mm laminated MDF centre panel floating in the frame.

The face is a 0.2mm embossed-grain vinyl in one of nine ex-stock colours, and the edges carry 2mm ABS end caps, chamfered, with a heat-transfer film on the rail so the grain continues over the edge rather than stopping at it.

Round brass knobs sit in the stiles. On a beaded door a knob is the correct hardware, because the bead has already given the frame its line and a bar would compete with it.

Designed around how you use your room

The Bastille shown is six doors to the ceiling on a single wall, which is the arrangement that shows the bead off best: a long, even rhythm of frames with nothing above them.

Built for everyday use: the bead is part of the frame, not applied to it, so there is nothing to catch, lift or fill with dust. The doors close on soft-close hinges and the dark grain hides fingermarks better than any pale finish will.

The second room shown puts a mirror into the upper panel of the two centre doors, above the mid-rail, so you get a dressing mirror at standing height while the lower panels stay in the woodgrain. The interior finish is chosen at the design visit.

A French-cut joint is only as good as the accuracy of the cut. The rail profile that receives the stile is machined by CNC in our HA9 Wembley factory, and the dowel holes are drilled on the six-sided machine so the bead lines up across the joint — which is the thing you notice on a beaded door when it is wrong.

The beam saw optimises each board to cut waste, and the carcass edges are finished on industrial edge-banding equipment. The heat-transfer rail film is applied after the frame is assembled, so the grain runs unbroken over the rail edge.

Is the Bastille a real five-piece door?

Yes — genuinely five pieces: two stiles, two rails and a floating centre panel, dowelled with 8mm beech dowels and glued, exactly as traditional joinery. The difference from painted joinery is the finish: each piece is wrapped in embossed-grain vinyl, so there are no paint lines to crack at the joints.

Does wood effect look convincing?

The textured wrap carries an embossed grain you can feel as well as see, and because the door is built from five real pieces, the shadow lines and proportions are those of real joinery — which is most of what the eye reads as “wood”.

Which panel layout should I choose?

Two-panel (shown) is the bedroom classic; single panel reads most contemporary; three, four and five panels suit taller period rooms — each extra panel adds a mid-rail. Tap the layouts above to compare, and your designer will advise for your ceiling height.

What does the bead actually do?

It draws a fine line around the inside of the frame where it meets the panel, and that line is the difference between a shaker door and a panelled one. Historically it covered the joint; on the Bastille it is machined into the frame itself, so there is nothing applied and nothing to lift. Stand a beaded door beside a plain one in the same finish and the beaded one reads as older, heavier and more expensive — which is the effect it is for.

Why does the grain always run vertically?

Because on a five-piece door the rails would otherwise show the grain running across while the stiles show it running up, and the eye reads that as five pieces. Keeping every component vertical makes the door look as though it was cut from a single wide board. The heat-transfer film on the rail edge carries the same grain over the edge so it does not stop at the chamfer.
