This is joinery with nothing hidden: the Brooklyn Oak is framed in kiln-dried solid oak — 21mm boards, slim 25mm stiles and rails around a floating oak-veneered centre panel — held together with profiled tenon joints, the same joint furniture makers have trusted for five hundred years. The Monroe Oak follows with broader 75mm stiles and rails in 20mm oak. Doors arrive hand-sanded and are finished to order: natural oil, matt lacquer, or tinted to warm or lime the grain. Edges carry a fine 1mm bevel, cut in the solid.

About This Style

At the very top of our range sits the simplest idea we offer: a wardrobe made of oak. Not oak-effect — kiln-dried solid oak frames, tenon-jointed the way furniture has been built for centuries, around an oak-veneered panel, hand-sanded and finished in front of you. Shown here on the Brooklyn Oak, whose slim 25mm frames let the grain do all the talking.

How it works: the Brooklyn Oak is 21mm solid oak around a floating oak-veneered centre panel; the Monroe Oak carries broader 75mm stiles in 20mm oak. Both use profiled tenon joints — the traditional cabinetmaker’s joint — with a fine 1mm bevel cut in the solid. Doors arrive hand-sanded and are finished to your choice: natural oil, matt lacquer, or a tinted oil to warm or lime the grain. Soft-close hinges throughout.

Why oak is bought once

Oak is bought once. A solid oak wardrobe does not date, does not need repainting and takes fifty years of doors being opened without looking any different, which is why it costs what it costs. We build it on two frames: the Brooklyn Oak, a plain shaker on slim 25mm stiles, and the Monroe Oak, the same door on a classic 75mm frame. The room shown uses the slim Brooklyn proportion.

Both are solid oak where it matters — the stiles and rails, kiln-dried and tenon-jointed — around a centre panel that is oak veneer on a stable core. That panel is veneered on purpose. A solid oak panel a door wide moves across its grain with the seasons; in a rigid frame it splits, and in a loose one it rattles. A veneered panel floats, stays flat and shows the same oak face.

How it works: Brooklyn Oak is 21mm thick on 25mm stiles; Monroe Oak is 20mm on 75mm stiles. Both carry a 1mm bevelled edge cut in the solid and are sanded by hand, then oiled, lacquered or tinted to the sample you approve. The arrangement shown wraps the bed in natural oak with slim black bars.

Designed around how you use your room

The frame you choose changes the room more than the finish does. Slim Brooklyn stiles read modern and let the panel dominate; wide Monroe stiles read traditional and hold a moulding-free door together visually across a long run.

Built for everyday use: an oiled oak surface can be refreshed with a cloth and a tin; a lacquered one wipes clean. Neither needs a decorator. Soft-close hinges throughout.

The carcass interior is chosen at the design visit.

Oak is selected board by board so the grain runs the same way down every stile in the run, then cut and tenoned on the CNC in our HA9 Wembley factory. The panels are veneered oak on a stable core so they will not move against the frame.

Each door is hand-sanded before the finish goes on, and the finish is the one you chose from a sample in your room. Our own fitters hang it to your survey sizes, and it carries a 10-year parts and labour guarantee.

Solid oak wardrobes: your questions answered

Is this different from your Oak Fitted Wardrobe page?

Yes — deliberately. Our Fenwick oak wardrobe wears an embossed oak-grain wrap over a five-piece MDF door (superb value, zero upkeep). This page is solid kiln-dried oak throughout, tenon-jointed — the material itself, at a materials price. Both are honest; they are different answers to different budgets.

Will solid oak move or crack?

All boards are kiln-dried before joinery and the tenon construction lets the timber breathe as one frame — the same engineering that keeps century-old oak furniture true. We do advise keeping wardrobes away from direct radiator blast, as with any solid timber.

Brooklyn Oak or Monroe Oak?

The same solid oak door on two frames. Brooklyn Oak has 25mm stiles — slim, modern, the panel dominates. Monroe Oak has 75mm stiles — the classic shaker proportion. In a period house or a large room the Monroe’s weight suits; in a flat or a small bedroom the Brooklyn keeps the run from looking heavy. Your designer brings a sample of each.

Oiled, lacquered or tinted — what is the difference?

Oil soaks in and leaves the oak looking like oak, with a natural matt surface you refresh yourself with a cloth. Lacquer sits on top as a clear, harder, wipe-clean skin — better for a family bedroom. A tint shifts the colour of the oak before either goes on, warmer or greyer, without hiding the grain. All three are chosen from samples in your room, not from a chart.
