This is the top of our range and the simplest story on the site: real wood. Every door is built from 20mm kiln-dried solid ash around a stable veneered centre panel, then hand-finished in polyurethane paint — or left as natural solid oak on the Brooklyn and Monroe. Frames run from the Brooklyn’s slim 25mm to the Rainey and Edison’s stately 84mm, with a fine 1mm chamfer painted through on every edge. Because the timber is real, so is the future: these doors can be sanded back and repainted years from now — a colour change is a decorator’s visit, not a new wardrobe.

Everything else we make imitates this. The Timber Painted family is built from real wood — 20mm kiln-dried solid ash — and hand-finished in polyurethane paint, shown here in a deep forest green with brass bars, wrapping over the bed with matching bedsides and dressing table. For purists, the Brooklyn and Monroe also come as natural solid oak.

How it works: each door is joined from solid ash around a stable veneered centre panel — the construction a traditional joiner would choose, kiln-dried so it behaves in a centrally-heated home. Frames run from the Brooklyn’s slim 25mm to the Edison’s 84mm (tap the doors above to compare), edges carry a fine painted-through chamfer, and hinges are soft-close. And because the wood is real, the paint is renewable: these wardrobes can be sanded and repainted in place, years from now.

The real thing, and why it still matters

Solid wood, here, means something specific: a door whose frame is solid kiln-dried ash, painted, around a centre panel that is veneered on a stable core so the paint never cracks at the joint. It is how painted joinery was made before board existed, and it is why a painted timber wardrobe can be repainted where it hangs and a wrapped one cannot.

There are five doors in the family, and the choice between them comes down to two things — how wide the frame is, and whether it carries a bead. Brooklyn has 25mm stiles and reads modern. Monroe and Campbell have 75mm stiles and read classic. Rainey and Edison have 84mm stiles with a bead around the panel and read period. The room shown is forest green, over the bed, with brass bars.

How it works: Brooklyn is 21mm thick; the other four are 20mm. All are chamfered at 1mm and painted through, so there is no raw edge, and all are matt painted in one of 34 standard colours, the 22 most popular shown on this page or matched to order. Built for everyday use: painted ash takes a knock without denting and a scuff is touched in with a brush. All five doors hang on soft-close hinges and all five repaint in place.

The carcass interior is chosen at the design visit.

Five doors, one construction. The stiles are cut from kiln-dried ash so they stay straight, the panels are veneered so they stay flat, and the bead on the Rainey and Edison is machined into the frame as a continuous profile in our HA9 Wembley factory rather than pinned on.

Is this really solid wood?

The frames genuinely are — 20mm kiln-dried solid ash, joined the traditional way. Centre panels are veneered board, which is deliberate: a fully solid panel would move with every season and crack its paint. This is how quality joiners have built painted doors for a century.

Painted or natural oak — how do I choose?

Painted suits colour-led rooms and period homes (and can change later); natural solid oak — available on the Brooklyn and Monroe — celebrates the grain itself. Your designer brings samples of both to the home visit.

Which of the five doors should I choose?

Start with the frame width, because that is what you see from across the room. Twenty-five millimetres (Brooklyn) reads modern; 75mm (Monroe, Campbell) reads classic; 84mm with a bead (Rainey, Edison) reads period. Then decide whether you want the bead. Colour comes last — all five take the same 34 colours, and all five can be repainted later, so it is the one decision you can revisit.

Why is the panel veneered if the door is solid wood?

Because a solid timber panel would crack the paint. Wood moves across its grain with the seasons; a panel a door wide moves several millimetres a year, and a rigid paint film over a moving joint splits. A veneered panel on a stable core stays flat and floats in the frame, so the solid ash stiles and rails can breathe without the paint following. It is how good painted joinery has always been made.
