About This Style

The Edison is the family’s most architectural face: 84mm frames, square shoulders, a door that orders the whole wall. This page is the Edison in full: a solid timber matt painted door — as the catalogue designates it — built from 20mm kiln-dried ash and hand-painted to the colour you choose.

How it works: 84mm solid ash stiles and rails frame a stable veneered centre panel; the finish is polyurethane matt paint with a 1mm chamfer painted through, and hinges are soft-close. Because the wood is real, the paint is renewable — the Edison can be sanded and repainted in place years from now, so a colour change is a decorator’s visit, not a new wardrobe.

Make it yours: painted to order (shades matched at your free home visit), ten interior colours, floor-to-ceiling runs, over-bed builds, alcoves, walk-ins and corners — every carcass cut to your room in our Wembley workshop. Compare the family using the door styles above.

Every Edison wardrobe is made to measure in North London and installed by our own fitters with a 10-year guarantee.

Edison Solid Timber Painted Wardrobes

The Edison, properly made

The Edison is a beaded shaker, which is the detail that separates a painted timber door from a painted board. A fine bead runs around the inside of the 84mm frame where it meets the panel, and in a matt paint the bead reads as a shadow line — the thing your eye picks out first on the forest green run shown, before it registers the colour.

It is painted timber, and painted timber is a decision about the future as much as the present. Solid ash takes a matt paint the way MDF cannot, with the grain faintly present under the surface, and it can be repainted in place — a different green, or a different colour altogether — without the doors coming off.

How it works: 20mm kiln-dried solid ash stiles and rails with the bead machined into the frame, around a floating veneered centre panel, chamfered at 1mm and painted through so there is no raw edge. Thirty-four colours are held as standard and the paint is matched to order beyond them. Slim brass bars are shown.

The arrangement shown is over the bed — tall bays either side, top boxes over the headboard, built-in bedsides and a dressing table on the return — all in the same green.

Designed around how you use your room

A beaded door suits a room that has a little detail to answer: a picture rail, a cornice, a panelled door. The Edison is drawn here in a sloped-ceiling bedroom, where the bead gives the shorter doors under the eaves the same character as the tall ones.

  • Hanging in the tall bays either side of the bed
  • Top boxes over the headboard
  • Bedside drawers built into the run
  • Dressing table on the return
  • Shelving and drawers inside, sized to you
  • Slim brass bar handles
  • Forest green shown; 34 colours as standard, others to order

Built for everyday use: a scuff on painted ash is touched in with a brush; a scuff on a wrapped door is permanent. The bead is machined, not applied, so it cannot lift. Soft-close hinges throughout.

The carcass interior is chosen at the design visit.

Manufactured in our Wembley workshop

The bead is the hard part. It is cut into the frame on the CNC in our HA9 Wembley factory as a single continuous profile, so it turns each corner without a joint showing — the place a hand-run bead always shows a step.

The doors are primed, painted and cured before they leave, then hung on site to your survey sizes. Our own fitters install it and it carries a 10-year parts and labour guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Edison door: your questions answered

What does the bead add?
A line. It runs around the inside of the frame where it meets the panel, and in matt paint it reads as a fine shadow that draws the door’s shape for you. A plain shaker in the same green would be a block of colour with a recess in it; the Edison is a framed panel. It is the difference between a painted door and a painted board.
How does repainting work?
In place. The doors stay on their hinges, the surface is keyed, and the new colour goes on — a weekend’s work for a decorator rather than a refit. Because the ash takes paint properly, the result is a painted door rather than a painted-over one. Thirty-four colours are held as standard, and anything else is matched to order.
Does the Edison work under a sloping ceiling?
It is drawn under one. The doors on the right of the room shown step down where the ceiling falls, and because the bead is machined into every frame at the same setting, the short doors carry the same detail as the tall ones. The run reads as one piece of joinery rather than a wardrobe with a shorter cupboard tacked on the end.
How big can a single painted ash door be?
Up to 996mm wide and 2400mm high. Beyond that a solid timber door starts to be too heavy for its hinges and too wide for its panel, so a taller opening is met with a top box and a wider one with a second door. Your designer sets the split so the stiles line up across the run.
