The Monroe, properly made

The Monroe is the Monroe Oak with a decision made differently. Same plain shaker frame, same 75mm stiles, same 20mm solid timber — but ash under matt paint rather than oak left natural. If you like the proportion of the Monroe Oak and want a colour rather than a grain, this is the same door in a different coat.

The choice between them is not about quality; it is about what you want to see. Oak shows the wood and can only be tinted. Paint shows the colour and can be anything — the forest green shown, or one of 34 standard colours, the 22 most popular shown on this page, or a colour matched to a swatch you bring to the design visit — and it can be changed later where the door hangs.

How it works: 20mm kiln-dried solid ash stiles and rails around a floating veneered centre panel, 1mm chamfered edge painted through, matt paint cured in the factory. The arrangement shown is over the bed under a sloping ceiling — tall bays, top boxes, built-in bedsides, dressing table — with slim brass bars.

The Monroe door: your questions answered

Monroe or Monroe Oak?

Same frame, two surfaces. The Monroe Oak is solid oak sanded and oiled, lacquered or tinted — you see the grain and you keep it. The Monroe is solid ash under matt paint — you see a colour and you can change it. Choose oak if the room wants warmth and texture; choose paint if it wants a colour, or if you expect to redecorate around it in ten years.

Can I match the paint to a colour I already have?

Yes. Thirty-four colours are held as standard, and beyond them the paint is matched to a swatch — a wall colour, a fabric, a tile. Bring it to the design visit and the door is painted to it in the factory. Because the ash takes paint properly, a matched colour looks like a colour, not like a tinted coating.

Are the top boxes the same door?

Yes. The boxes that bridge the headboard are the Monroe door cut shorter — the same 75mm frame, the same recess, painted at the same time as the tall doors so the colour matches exactly. That is what keeps an over-bed run looking like one wardrobe rather than a wardrobe with cupboards above the bed.

Will I see the wood grain through the paint?

Faintly, and only if you look for it. Ash has an open grain, and under a matt paint it shows as a slight texture in a raking light rather than a pattern. It is the tell that the door is timber. If you would rather have a perfectly flat surface, say so and the doors are grain-filled before priming.
