Because the timber is real, the paint is renewable — the Rainey can be sanded back and repainted in place, years from now.

Rainey Solid Timber Painted Wardrobes

The Rainey, properly made

The Rainey is for the room that already has mouldings. A beaded shaker on 84mm solid ash stiles, it puts a fine bead around the panel that answers a cornice or a picture rail directly, so a painted wardrobe in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom reads as joinery that belongs to the house rather than a modern cabinet standing in it.

Why solid ash under paint, rather than the MDF most painted doors are made from? Because ash is what painted joinery was always made from. It holds a screw, it takes a knock without denting, and when the paint eventually tires it can be keyed and repainted where it hangs. An MDF door under paint is a finish you cannot change.

How it works: 20mm kiln-dried solid ash stiles and rails with the bead machined in, a floating veneered centre panel — veneered so it will not split the paint as it moves — and a 1mm chamfered edge painted through. Slim brass bars are shown on the forest green.

Built for everyday use: ash under matt paint marks less than a wrapped door and repairs where a wrapped door cannot. The bead is cut into the frame, so it never lifts. Soft-close hinges throughout.

The carcass interior is chosen at the design visit.

Ash moves more than MDF, which is why a painted ash door has to be built to allow for it — the panel floats in its groove rather than being glued, and the stiles are cut from kiln-dried stock so the door does not twist after it is hung. That is done in our HA9 Wembley factory, and the bead is machined as one continuous profile.

The doors are painted and cured before they leave, then hung on site to your survey sizes by our own fitters. It carries a 10-year parts and labour guarantee.

The Rainey door: your questions answered

Why solid ash rather than MDF under paint?

Because paint on ash is a finish; paint on MDF is a coating. Ash holds a screw, shrugs off a knock, and can be keyed and repainted where it hangs when the colour tires. MDF under paint dents, and once the surface is damaged it cannot be sanded back. If you expect to keep the wardrobe for twenty years and change its colour twice, ash is the material that lets you.

Will a painted timber door crack along the panel?

Not the Rainey. A solid panel would — timber moves across the grain with the seasons and a rigid paint film cracks at the joint. The Rainey’s centre panel is veneered on a stable core and floats in its groove, so the frame can move a fraction without the panel following it. The paint stays whole.

Which colour is shown?

Forest green in matt, with slim brass bars. It is one of the 34 colours held as standard. Green in a deep matt is a colour that suits a beaded door particularly well, because the bead throws a shadow the paint cannot flatten, and brass reads warm against it without shouting.

Can the top boxes line up with a picture rail?

Yes, and on a period room that is usually the right call. The junction between the tall doors and the top boxes is set to the rail height so the wardrobe borrows the room’s own line rather than cutting a new one across the wall. Where there is a cornice, the top boxes are scribed under it instead of stopping short.
