The Westbury Walk-In Wardrobe is arranged as a galley. Two facing banks of open storage run the length of the room and stop at a window, so the daylight arrives down the middle of the wardrobe rather than from behind you — which is the difference between choosing a jumper and guessing at one.

The window wall is not left empty. A three-drawer bank sits beneath the sill, filling the one part of a dressing room that cannot take full-height storage and giving the run a natural centre to work from.

How it works: the Westbury is built from E1-grade MFC in a soft cashmere matt, carried inside and out so the shelves, the drawer fronts and the carcase are all the same tone. Against a pale finish the contents supply the contrast, which is why the shelving is open rather than fronted.

The drawers open on satin nickel knobs rather than a handleless rail. On a pale, quiet run they read as furniture rather than joinery, and they are a deliberate softening of what would otherwise be a very minimal room.

Designed around how you use your room

A galley suits a room that is longer than it is wide, and it is the most storage-dense arrangement we build because both walls work. The Westbury shown gives over almost all of that length to open shelving, with hanging at the far end.

The Westbury shown here runs cashmere matt throughout. A pale finish in a galley is a practical choice as much as an aesthetic one — with two runs facing each other, a dark finish would absorb the light bouncing between them and leave the middle of the room dim.

Two facing runs are unforgiving, because every shelf on one side is read against the shelf opposite it. If one is a few millimetres out, you see it the length of the room. Your Westbury is surveyed on site and both runs are set out from the same datum.

It is precision-manufactured in our HA9 Wembley factory. Our beam saw optimises board usage to reduce waste, CNC and six-sided drilling machine the shelf positions accurately so facing pairs line through, and industrial edge-banding finishes every exposed edge — of which an open galley has a great many.

How much room does a galley need?

Two facing runs at 600mm each use 1200mm of floor before anyone walks anywhere, so a galley wants a room of at least 3 metres across. That leaves 1800mm clear down the middle — enough to open a drawer on one side and still pass behind it. In a narrower room, a single run with hanging opposite is the better arrangement.

Why is so much of it open shelving rather than hanging?

Because most people own more folded clothing than they think and less hanging than they assume. Open shelving is also the fastest storage to use: nothing to open, nothing at the back. The Westbury keeps full-height hanging on the end return for coats and dresses, which is usually all the long hang a room actually needs.

What goes under the window?

A three-drawer bank at sill height. The wall beneath a window cannot take full-height storage, so it is the one part of a dressing room that is normally wasted. Filling it with drawers keeps the daylight, gives the run a centre, and adds concealed storage to an otherwise entirely open wardrobe.

Why knobs instead of handleless?

A pale, entirely open galley can read as very austere. Satin nickel knobs give the drawers a point of detail and make the run feel like furniture rather than shelving. They are also the easiest thing to use one-handed. Handleless and bar handles are both available if you prefer.

Does a pale finish mark easily?

Cashmere matt is a hard-wearing melamine face rather than a paint, so it does not scuff the way a sprayed finish can, and it wipes clean. In a galley the pale finish is doing a job as well: two runs facing each other bounce light between them, where a dark finish would absorb it and leave the middle of the room dim.

How do you keep two facing runs lined through?

Both runs are set out from a single datum taken at survey, rather than each being measured from its own wall. Shelf positions are then machined by CNC so a shelf on one side lands at the same height as the shelf opposite it. In a galley you read one run against the other down the whole length of the room, so a few millimetres of drift would be obvious. Covered by a 10-year parts and labour guarantee.

How the space is divided

The Six Storage Zones

A walk-in is not one big cupboard — it is a set of zones, each sized for what goes in it. These are the six we build from, with the dimensions we actually work to. Your designer combines them around what you own rather than filling the run with a single repeated layout.

Double hang WESTBURY WALK-IN

Two hanging tiers stacked in one bay. Each gives 950mm of clear hanging under an 18mm shelf, so the pair occupies 1936mm in total. It suits shirts, trousers, folded-over skirts and jackets, and it is the single most effective way to increase what a run holds — the same width of wardrobe carries twice the garments.

Full hang

The same 1936mm module as a double hang, used as a single drop of 1918mm clear beneath the shelf. This is where dresses, long coats and suit carriers go. Most rooms need far less full hang than people expect — two or three bays is usually plenty, and the rest is better given to double hang.

Drawer bank

A 600mm-high bank holding three soft-close drawers at 200mm each. Drawers are almost always specified at waist height rather than low down, because that is where you want the things you reach for daily — folded knitwear, underwear, belts and watches — without bending.

Open shelving

Shelves are set at 250 to 300mm apart as a minimum. A folded jumper wants 250mm; a stack of jeans or a handbag standing upright wants the full 300mm. Closer than 250mm and the shelf stops being usable for anything but paper-thin items, which is why the spacing is worth getting right at the design stage.

Shoe storage

Flat shelves at the base of a run, each with a raised front lip so nothing slides forward. Keeping shoes low leaves the eye level of the wardrobe clear for clothing, and the lip means a shelf can be shallow-set without anything tipping out when you pull a pair from the back.

The 600mm run

Every Metro walk-in run is 600mm deep, and that figure is not arbitrary — it is set by the width of a coat hanger, so anything shallower makes clothes sit at an angle and crush against the front. Two facing runs therefore use 1200mm of floor before anyone has walked anywhere, which is why two facing runs need a room of at least 2.1 metres across, and 3 metres to feel generous.
