The Annabelle looks like joinery — arched top rail, raised panel, stepped moulding — but it is pressed from a single board. The cathedral arch and its ogee moulding are routed into an 18mm E1-grade MDF core, then the whole face is wrapped in one seamless skin, so there are no glued joints to open and no paint lines to crack. Stiles measure a classic 55mm, tall doors carry two panels, and every edge finishes in Profile Edge 2 — a softly rounded 10mm edge that suits the traditional profile.

About This Style

Black is the boldest thing you can do to a bedroom — and the most forgiving, when the doors have detail to catch the light. This wall is built on the Annabelle door: a classic cathedral arch with raised panels and stepped mouldings, shown in matt black with slim brass bar pulls, a pairing straight out of a Mayfair dressing room.

How it works: the arch, panel and moulding are routed into an 18mm E1-grade MDF core (PEFC/FSC® accredited), then wrapped in one seamless skin — the look of traditional joinery with none of its joints. Stiles are a classic 55mm, edges finish softly rounded (Profile Edge 2), tall doors carry two panels, and drawer fronts take a matching shaped motif. Doors hang on soft-close hinges with your choice of handles — the brass bars shown, or anything from our library.

Make it yours: matt black is one of 80+ matt, superior matt and woodgrain finishes (the Annabelle is not offered in gloss — its mouldings are made for soft light). Ten interior colours, floor-to-ceiling and loft-level top boxes as shown, alcoves, walk-ins and corners — all cut in our Wembley workshop.

Black, done the traditional way

The Black Fitted Wardrobe does black the traditional way. The Annabelle is a cathedral arch — the curve drawn to a taller point than the Verona’s crown — over a raised panel, on 55mm stiles. In matt black the arch reads as a silhouette, and a row of them across a wall is the most architectural thing in this range.

The run shown is broken at its centre by a lit oak niche with drawers beneath, and a dressing table with a lit round mirror sits on the return, so the black is warmed by oak and light exactly where you stand to use it.

How it works: an 18mm E1-grade MDF door machined with the cathedral arch and a raised centre panel, wrapped in 5G vinyl that follows the profile. Brass bar handles run vertically on the doors and horizontally on the drawers.

Matt black on a raised panel gives you two blacks — the flat of the panel and the shadow of the moulding — which is why it reads as detail rather than as a dark wall.

The Annabelle suits a room with height. The tall point of the arch wants a tall door under it, and it is drawn here with top boxes to the ceiling.

A cathedral arch has the longest curve of the arched family, and a raised panel beneath it that must be centred on the arch to the millimetre. Both are one machining pass in our HA9 Wembley factory, so the peak and the panel can never drift apart.

Arch and raised panel are one machining pass so the point and the panel stay centred, boards are cut on the beam saw, and the drawer and hinge positions are drilled on the six-sided machine.

Are black fitted wardrobes too dark for a bedroom?

Not when the doors carry detail. The Annabelle’s arches and raised panels give matt black constant soft shadow-play, and brass hardware, warm lighting or an open shelving bay (as shown) lift the wall. In rooms with decent daylight, black reads as tailored rather than heavy.

Does matt black show dust and fingerprints?

Matt and superior matt faces are the most forgiving finishes we make — far better than gloss for marks. A soft dry cloth is all the care they need.

How is an arched door made without joints?

What is a cathedral arch?

An arch drawn to a taller, narrower point than a crown — the shape of a church window rather than a doorway. On the Annabelle it sits over a raised panel, so the door has both the tallest arch in the range and the most depth beneath it. It wants a tall room; on a low ceiling the point gets cramped.

Does matt black show dust?

Matt black shows dust less than gloss black and less than you would guess, because there is no reflection for the dust to sit in front of. What it does show is fingermarks near the handles, which is why the run has brass bars — hands go on the metal, not the face. A dry microfibre cloth keeps it clean.
