About This Style

The Islington Oak Chest of Drawers is a plain oak block: four deep drawers with no handles, opened by a routed pull along the top edge of each front, and a grain that runs unbroken down all four. It is the chest that does not want to be noticed, for a hallway, a landing or a calm bedroom.

Made in our Wembley workshop on a solid-back carcass with full-extension soft-close drawers, and delivered assembled by our own team under a 10-year guarantee.

Islington Oak Chest of Drawers

The Islington is a chest reduced to a block. No handles, no plinth line, no top overhang: four fronts cut from one sheet so the oak grain runs through them, with a groove routed along the top edge of each to open it. In a hallway it is a place for keys and post; in a bedroom it is four deep drawers that disappear into the wall.

The oak is a natural veneer with the figure kept, so the piece reads as timber rather than as a laminate, and the top and the sides are the same board, mitred at the corners so the grain turns the corner.

How it works: the four drawers are 16mm solid-sided boxes on full-extension soft-close runners, each with a 30mm-deep pull routed into the top edge of the front so a hand goes in without a handle. The fronts are cut in sequence from one sheet and numbered so the grain matches; the carcass is a solid back and mitred sides.

Designed to be quiet

A handleless chest works where a room is already full of detail: a panelled wall, a patterned floor, a gallery of pictures. The Islington gives the eye nowhere to stop, which is why it suits a hallway as well as a bedroom.

Designed for the room: the chest can be three, four or five drawers high, any width from 800mm to 1.4 metres, and made in walnut, ash or a painted colour with the same routed pull.

Built for everyday use: the pull is cut into the front rather than added to it, so there is nothing to catch or loosen, and every edge is banded in 2mm oak.

The Islington is cut in our HA9 Wembley factory from sequenced oak sheets so the grain matches, the pulls are routed on the CNC, and the drawers are fitted and adjusted before delivery.
