Like every door in the MDF Painted collection it is machined from a single piece of 18mm E1-grade MDF — the profile routed, never joined — then primed in polyester and finished in polyurethane matt paint. No joints means nowhere for paint to crack: the flaw that ages painted joinery simply cannot happen here.

How it works: the 28mm border is machined from a single piece of 18mm E1-grade MDF, primed in polyester and finished in polyurethane matt paint with paintable ABS edging. The Gladstone, properly painted

The Gladstone is the door for people who want painted furniture without a shaker. It is a flat slab, 18mm, with a single fine border routed 28mm in from the edge — nothing more. From the doorway it reads as in-frame joinery, a panel set inside a frame; standing at it, it is a smooth painted face with one clean line. In the warm grey shown, under a dark ceiling line and against a slatted timber wall, that restraint is the whole point.

What makes it possible is the material. The border is cut into one piece of MDF rather than built from four pieces of timber, so there is no joint at the corner for paint to crack along and no frame to shrink away from a panel. The face stays as flat in ten years as the day it was sprayed.

How it works: one seamless piece of 18mm E1-grade MDF, the 28mm border routed on the CNC, edges finished in a paintable 1mm ABS so the colour wraps the door, then a polyester primer and a polyurethane matt paint in one of 33 standard colours, the 22 most popular shown on this page or a colour matched to order. The room shown runs the doors to a top-box line under the cornice, with slim brass bars and a dressing table with a mirror on the return.

The run shown is a full wall of hanging and top-box storage facing the bed, with a second bank beside the bed and matching bedside chests. The border on each door lines through across the run, so the wall reads as one piece.

Built for everyday use: a flat matt face with one shallow line collects almost nothing and wipes with a damp cloth. Touch-up paint is supplied in the same colour. Soft-close hinges throughout.

The carcass interior is chosen at the design visit.

The border is routed to a fixed depth on every door, top box and drawer front in one CNC programme in our HA9 Wembley factory, which is why the line is the same weight everywhere on the run — under a raking light that is what separates a good faux in-frame from a cheap one.

The Gladstone door: your questions answered

What does “faux in-frame” mean?

A true in-frame door sits inside a separate frame, with a gap around it — the most expensive kind of joinery. The Gladstone draws that line on a flat slab instead: a single border routed 28mm in from the edge. You get the look of a framed panel with none of the joints, and because it is one piece of MDF there is nothing to move or crack.

Is it a slab or a shaker?

Neither, exactly. It is flatter than a shaker — there is no recessed panel, just a fine line — and more detailed than a slab. If a plain slab feels too blank for a painted bedroom and a shaker feels too traditional, the Gladstone is the door in between. Up close it is smooth; from the bed it is framed.

Why brass bars on a grey door?

Because the room shown is dark — near-black walls, a slatted timber wall behind the bed, a walnut floor — and warm grey with brass sits inside that palette rather than fighting it. The bars are slim so they do not compete with the border line. Knobs, or black bars, are available if the room is lighter.

How does the door edge take paint?

The edge is a 1mm ABS strip designed to be painted, applied before priming, so the colour wraps the door and the edge is the same matt grey as the face. On a cheaper painted MDF door the edge is left as a different material and shows as a line when the door is open. Here it does not.
