About This Style

The Hartford carries broad 90mm frames — the proportion of period joinery, routed seamlessly so the painted finish stays perfect. This is the Hartford — designated MDF matt painted in the catalogue — the painted look engineered onto a seamless board.

How it works: the 90mm frame profile is machined from a single piece of 18mm E1-grade MDF, primed in polyester and finished in polyurethane matt paint with a soft 2mm painted radius edge. Because there are no joints, there is nowhere for paint to crack — the painted look without painted joinery’s one weakness. Soft-close hinges throughout.

Make it yours: painted to order — shades matched at your free home visit — with ten interior colours; floor-to-ceiling runs, alcoves, walk-ins and corners, every carcass cut to your room in our Wembley workshop. Compare the family with the door styles above, or step up to hand-painted solid timber.

Every Hartford wardrobe is made to measure in North London and installed by our own fitters with a 10-year guarantee.

Hartford MDF Painted Wardrobes

The Hartford, properly painted

The Hartford is the shaker with the widest frame in the painted range. Ninety-millimetre stiles and rails around a recessed panel give a door with real presence — it wants a tall room and a proper cornice, and the room shown gives it both, running the soft grey doors and top boxes to the ceiling line against near-black walls.

A wide-framed shaker in timber has a weakness: four pieces of wood meeting at four corners, each joint a place the paint can crack as the seasons change. The Hartford has no corners. The frame and the panel are one piece of MDF with the recess routed out, so a broad frame that would be a liability in timber is simply a shape here.

How it works: 18mm E1-grade MDF in a single seamless piece, the panel recess routed on the CNC, a 2mm radius on every edge, then a polyester primer and a polyurethane matt paint in one of 33 standard colours, the 22 most popular shown on this page or a matched colour. The run shown faces the bed with a second bank alongside it, bedside chests, and a dressing table with a mirror on the return, all with slim brass bars.

Designed around how you use your room

Broad frames make each door read as a unit, so the Hartford suits a run of tall doors with few divisions — full-height hanging behind each pair, folded storage in the top boxes above.

  • Full-wall run facing the bed, top boxes to the cornice
  • Second bank beside the bed
  • Bedside chests and dressing table on the same door
  • Long hanging behind each pair, shelves and drawers to order
  • Slim brass bars shown
  • Soft grey shown; 33 standard colours, the 22 most popular shown on this page, others matched

Built for everyday use: the panel recess is wide and shallow, so it wipes clean, and the matt paint does not show hand marks around the bars. Touch-up paint in the door colour is supplied. Soft-close hinges throughout.

The carcass interior is chosen at the design visit.

Manufactured in our Wembley workshop

The recess is the door, on a Hartford, so its depth and its edge are held on one CNC setting in our HA9 Wembley factory across every front on the order. A 90mm frame shows any variation, and there is none.

Primed, sprayed and cured before it leaves, hung to your survey sizes by our own fitters, with a 10-year parts and labour guarantee.

“Metro Kitchens and Bedrooms have done a fantastic job. I have had fitted wardrobes in the bedroom. I was very impressed with the installation fitters (Hiren and Montu), the designer (Rento) and (Magda) who took care of all the communication and paperwork. They all worked with us, reassuring us throughout the whole process. Well done guys.”

“Just got my new fitted wardrobe from these guys and I couldn't be happier! Starting from the design visit to the installation everything was so fast and easy - the designer, Ranto, came to my house and helped me come up with the perfect design that fit my storage needs. He sent me the 3d design on the same day and also, did the changes until I liked the design. Then the fitting team, led by Kinjal, came and installed it all in just a 2 days. I love how my new wardrobe looks - it's exactly what I wanted. I would definitely recommend Metro!”

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hartford door: your questions answered

Hartford or Parker?
Frame width. Both are plain shakers in one piece of painted MDF; the Hartford’s stiles are 90mm, the Parker’s 60mm. Ninety suits a tall room, a high cornice and wide doors, where a slim frame would look thin. Sixty suits a smaller room or a run of narrow doors, where a wide frame would leave too little panel. Your designer brings both.
Can painted MDF crack at the corners like painted wood?
No, because there are no corners. A timber shaker is four pieces joined; the joints move and the paint cracks along them. The Hartford’s frame and panel are routed from a single piece of MDF, so there is no joint to move. It is the honest advantage of MDF under paint, and it matters most on a wide frame like this one.
Does the grey shown work in a light room?
Yes, differently. In the dark room shown the soft grey reads as the light element. In a white room the same grey reads as the colour. If you want the doors to recede in a pale room, go lighter than the walls; if you want them to be the feature, pick one of the deeper standard colours. All 33 are sprayed to the same matt finish.
What is the tallest single door?
Doors are made up to 2400mm high, but above roughly 1735mm a painted MDF door is supplied as two panels with a mid-rail across it. In a bedroom that rail is usually unwelcome, so the Hartford is drawn — as in the room shown — with tall doors to a top-box line and separate top boxes above, which also gives you a distinct cupboard for the things you reach for least.
