The Arena is painted minimalism done properly: a 22mm seamless slab whose matt paint reads like a plastered wall — calm, shadowless, architectural. Like every door in the MDF Painted collection it is machined from a single piece of E1-grade MDF — here the collection’s thickest, at 22mm, the profile routed, never joined — then primed in polyester and finished in polyurethane matt paint. No joints means nowhere for paint to crack: the flaw that ages painted joinery simply cannot happen here.

The Arena is painted minimalism done properly: a 22mm seamless slab whose matt paint reads like a plastered wall — calm, shadowless, architectural. This is the Arena — designated MDF matt painted (smooth) in the catalogue — the painted look engineered onto a seamless board.

How it works: the perfectly flat face is machined from a single piece of 22mm E1-grade MDF, primed in polyester and finished in polyurethane matt paint with a soft 2mm painted radius edge. Because there are no joints, there is nowhere for paint to crack — the painted look without painted joinery’s one weakness. Soft-close hinges throughout.

The painted look, without the upkeep

A painted wardrobe used to mean upkeep: a decorator every few years, a frame that cracked at the corners, a colour you were stuck with. Painted MDF changed that, and this page is the family. The door shown is the Arena — a handleless J-pull slab in mid grey, floor to top box, no hardware at all — and beside it sit four more painted doors that share its material and its paint: the Parker and Hartford shakers, the Wellington mock in-frame and the Gladstone in-frame slab.

The Arena is the one that is handleless. A 40mm-deep cavity is cut into the top edge of each door so your fingers go in behind it, which is why it is 22mm thick rather than the family’s 18mm — there has to be enough door left above the cavity. In the room shown the cavity reads as a thin shadow line along each door, and that is the only line on the run.

How it works: every door in the family is a single piece of E1-grade MDF with its detail routed in, sprayed with a polyester primer and a polyurethane matt paint in one of 33 standard colours, the 22 most popular shown on this page, and supplied with touch-up paint. The Arena is also held ex-stock in primer, so a standard-size door can be sprayed and delivered faster than a made-to-order one.

Designed around how you use your room

Choose the door by how much line you want on the wall. None: the Arena. One: the Gladstone. A frame: the Parker at 60mm or the Hartford at 90mm. A frame with a frame inside it: the Wellington. Then choose the colour, which is the same 33 for all five.

Built for everyday use: sprayed polyurethane is harder than a brushed finish and does not need a decorator to maintain. A chip is touched in with the supplied paint. All five doors hang on soft-close hinges.

The carcass interior is chosen at the design visit.

The J-pull cavity is machined into the Arena on the CNC in our HA9 Wembley factory as a continuous profile along the door edge, then primed and sprayed with the face so the inside of the pull is the same colour as the front — the place a cheaper handleless door shows bare board.

Every door in the family is cured before it leaves, hung by our own fitters to your survey sizes, and covered by a 10-year parts and labour guarantee.

The Arena door: your questions answered

Why is the Arena 22mm when the other painted doors are 18mm?

Because of the handle. The J-pull is a 40mm-deep cavity machined into the door edge, and cutting that into an 18mm door would leave too little material above it. At 22mm the door keeps its stiffness with the cavity in place. Everything else — the MDF grade, the primer, the paint, the colours — is the same as the rest of the family.

Do I have to open a handleless door from the top?

Yes, on a J-pull — the cavity runs along the top edge of a base door and the bottom edge of a top box, so you reach into the gap and pull. There is no push-to-open mechanism to fail and nothing on the face to catch a sleeve. If you would rather have something to hold, the four other doors on this page take bars or knobs.

Which of the five painted doors should I start with?

Decide how much line you want on the wall. The Arena has none. The Gladstone has one. The Parker and Hartford have a frame, slim or broad. The Wellington has a frame with a second line inside it. Colour is the last decision, because all five are sprayed in the same 33 colours and the same matt finish, so it does not narrow the choice of door.

What happens if the paint chips?

You touch it in. Every painted door is supplied with a small pot of the same colour, and because the finish is a sprayed matt polyurethane rather than a brushed paint, a touched-in chip disappears rather than showing as a patch. A painted timber door needs the same care; a wrapped door cannot be repaired at all.
