The Wellington adds a fine 6mm groove line inside its 90mm frames — a quiet extra shadow that reads bespoke from across the room. Like every door in the MDF Painted collection it is machined from a single piece of 18mm E1-grade MDF — the profile routed, never joined — then primed in polyester and finished in polyurethane matt paint. No joints means nowhere for paint to crack: the flaw that ages painted joinery simply cannot happen here.

The Wellington adds a fine 6mm groove line inside its 90mm frames — a quiet extra shadow that reads bespoke from across the room. This is the Wellington — designated MDF matt painted in the catalogue — the painted look engineered onto a seamless board.

How it works: the 90mm frame profile is machined from a single piece of 18mm E1-grade MDF, primed in polyester and finished in polyurethane matt paint with a soft 2mm painted radius edge. Because there are no joints, there is nowhere for paint to crack — the painted look without painted joinery’s one weakness. Soft-close hinges throughout.

The Wellington, properly painted

The Wellington is the shaker that pretends to be in-frame, and pretends well. Its 90mm stiles and rails carry a second, finer groove running just inside the frame line, so each door shows a double edge — the outer frame and the inner one — exactly the shadow a panel makes when it is set within a separate frame. In the greige shown, with brass bars and the top boxes taken up to the cornice, the run has the weight of cabinetmaking from a house a century older than the one it is in.

Real in-frame wardrobes cost what they cost because every door needs its own frame and every frame needs fitting. The Wellington puts the detail into a single piece of MDF instead. The frame line and the inner groove are both routed, at fixed depths, so they are identical on every door and drawer front on the run.

How it works: 18mm E1-grade MDF in one piece, the shaker recess and the inner groove cut on the CNC, a 2mm radius on the edges so the paint holds, then polyester primer and a polyurethane matt paint. Thirty-three colours are standard and the Wellington is made to order in any of them or to a matched colour. The room shown runs a full wall of doors facing the bed and a second bank beside it, with bedside chests and a mirrored dressing table on the return.

Designed around how you use your room

The Wellington is drawn to the room’s architecture. The top boxes are scribed to the cornice, the doors are stacked as tall doors plus top boxes rather than one floor-to-ceiling door, and the double line on every front runs through at the same height across the wall.

Built for everyday use: the grooves are shallow and rounded, so a cloth runs through them, and the matt paint hides finger marks that gloss would show. Touch-up paint is supplied. Soft-close hinges throughout.

The carcass interior is chosen at the design visit.

Two cutter passes per door — the shaker recess, then the inner groove — run on the CNC in our HA9 Wembley factory to depths held across the whole order. That is what keeps the double line even from door to door; on a hand-routed version it wanders.

The Wellington door: your questions answered

How is the Wellington different from a plain shaker?

By one line. A plain shaker has a frame and a recessed panel. The Wellington adds a fine groove just inside the frame, so the panel appears to sit within a separate frame — the look of in-frame joinery. Side by side with the Hartford, which shares the 90mm stile, the Wellington reads as the more traditional and more expensive door. It is not more expensive.

Why top boxes rather than full-height doors?

Two reasons. A painted MDF door over about 1735mm high is made as two panels with a mid-rail, which breaks the design; stopping the door and adding a top box avoids that and gives you a separate cupboard for folded storage. And the top box lets the run be scribed to the cornice, as in the room shown, so the wardrobe meets the ceiling like the joinery it is imitating.

Will the grooves collect dust?

Less than you would think. Both grooves are shallow and rounded at the bottom, so a duster passes through them rather than catching. A matt finish also shows dust less than a gloss one. The room shown is a dark scheme with a greige door, which is one of the more forgiving combinations for a bedroom.

Is greige a standard colour?

If you have a wall paint you want the doors to sit against, bring the swatch to the design visit and the door is matched to it. Because the finish is sprayed in the factory, a matched colour is as even as a standard one.
